Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a Houseplant - hanging plant with green and purple leavesI got three little branches from a friend who was propagating her plant, but now I can't get ahold of her as to what type of plant it is. It has purple-green leaves. It grows fast and the branches/leaves hang down from the pot as they get heavier. Any ideas what type of plant this is?

Looks like a wandering jew. They are hearty! www.urbanorganicyield.com/.../

Mine do well in bright indirect afternoon sun. The like water, but not too much. You can keep starting new plants from clippings. I have done both directly to dirt or water until roots form and then pot.

The only downside is they shed leaves fairly frequently. Still, they are lovely and brighten the room.

Enjoy!

I agree that it looks like a Wandering Jew plant. You can get some additional information about it at www.epicgardening.com/.../

Enjoy your plant.

It's a great plant for sharing with friends because it propagates so easily.

Looks like a Wandering Jew Tradescantia pallid or some call it a Purple Heart also.

  • It is very easy to take care of either in a container or outside as sort of ground cover but it is said to only grow outside in USDA zones 8-11. I live in zone 9 and my outside plants will not always live through the winter so that does not always hod true - maybe outside in zones 10-11..
  • Container grown is good but yours looks a little "leggy" so you should think about pruning/cutting it back so it will get bushier and fill up your container.

  • Have you seen it bloom? Has pretty small pinkish flowers - pretty.
  • Care:
  • Wandering jew plants have a tendency to get leggy, so pruning them becomes a must if you want to maintain a healthy appearance. Plants need bright but indirect sunlight.
  • Just keeping the soil evenly moist is the best. And add fertilizer at least twice a month during the growing season (now) but only about 50% strength to avoid nutrient burn on the foliage.
  • Here are a couple of sites that have basic care instructions to help you to have a beautiful full round ball of a plant.
