Identifying a Houseplant?

Identifying a HouseplantI received this plant from my mom. She doesn't remember the name of this plant. It doesn't have any flowers on it, but the trunk has faded due to tobacco poisoning. I am not sure if this plant will survive, but I've changed as much of the soil as I can to new fresh soil and water it regularly. Any pointers would be great.

It looks like a schleffera plant. It is easy to care for. Give it light and even watering.

I believe you have a rubber plant and these are easy to care for but they will grow very tall and will need some support.
As to the tobacco poisoning, if you cannot completely change the soil I would recommend a complete flushing; preferably outdoors as it will take several runs of water through the soil to eliminate the contaminants.

Try to run with continuous water for several minutes with the water flowing out of the bottom. I use this method when my plants have gathered 'salt' from using regular water in my pot plants (you will sometimes see a white 'ring' on the outside of clay pots) and it flushes out the salt and then I can restart my 'care' program. Others may have a different method for doing this or may be able to use 'distilled' water but I have too many potted plants for this but I do save large quantities of rain water when possible.
