This is a "Dome Top Steamer Trunk". For many who travelled, a dome top trunk was preferred over a flat top trunk. The flat tops could be and were stacked upon each other, sometimes crushing or doing other damage to the trunks below. The dome top trunks could only go on top of the stacks and therefore less chance of damage to the trunk and it's contents. The dome top trunks also provided a little more capacity for belongings.

As far as age, if you can find any numbers or a date on the lock mechanism or if there is a label on the inside of the trunk lid (most likely under the liner), that would help narrow your search, as dome top trunks were made from about 1800 on through the early 1900's. Yours looks to be in fairly good condition. Nice piece. Thanks for sharing.

This is an Antique Dome Top / Humpback Metal Trunk.
Dome-Topped trunks are also referred to as round top, camel, barrel and humpback trunks.
Sheet metal covering for trunks was made from flat sheets of most commonly zinc, tin or sheet iron. Your trunk is plated with not embossed sheet metal.

About half of all people call any trunk a steamer trunk. A true steamer trunk is a low profile trunk, no more than about 14" high, but can be small or large in length (to fit under the berths of trains or in the cabin of a steamer, hence their name).

You trunk is in good conditions, but you didn't write the dimensions. I think the price is about $300-400. But the price depends not only on the state of the trunk, but also on where this trunk is sold, on the demand/prices in your area.

Your trunk looks like a Victorian Era 1880s-1890s Metal Dome Top Trunk. www.thepirateslair.com/506-antique-dome-top-trunk.html
Check the lock, maybe it is dated.

Curved trunks are handy for storing things you dont use daily, such as party table linens, guest bedding or family photo albums. The low curve does a good job of keeping the top clear because piled stuff tends to roll off.
