Kenmore Keeps Switching from Zig Zag to Straight Stitch?

Kenmore Keeps Switching from Zig Zag to Straight Stitch - closeup of machineI have a Kenmore sewing machine model 835.16221. The first 12-15 stitches on the zigzag setting are perfect and then it switches to a straight stitch. Any ideas on how to correct this?

it sounds like you are saying that you set the machine to stitch zig zag and in the middle of sewing it switches over to straight stitch. This is normally an issue with the machine setting or the mother board of the machine moving. This is an older machine and your setting are done with the buttons on the machine. You will need to open the machine up and give it a good cleaning inside. That means removing the top cover of the machine. Drop 1 drop of oil in the control location to make sure it is not moving on you. You may need to order some replacement parts if one is worn on the inside.

Sounds like something is worn but not completely and will start okay but slips after a few stitches. Either that or could be something (old thread or debris/gunk) that gets jammed after a few stitches.

Could just need oil but most of the time the following sites have a walk through to help you DIY.

Google Sears Service Center with your zip code and give them a call. usually they know right off what is causing the problem as they usually know Kenmore products better than anyone.
They may tell you to take it in but just say no and ask what you can do yourself. They should also be able to direct you to a free manual.

You can ask for help on this link but recheck your model number as this site is not finding that number (maybe 385?).

it looks like the mechanism is worn and so shifts over mid-stitch. If you pulled it apart you might notice something is threaded.

probably a professional would fix it
