Kitchen Paint Colour Advice?

Kitchen Paint Colour AdviceI am useless at choosing colours for my kitchen. It is a small galley kitchen with maple units and wall cupboards. The work top is black with specks of grey, hardly noticeable, and the floor is a dark colour like a blacky brown. The splash back tiles are like a light terracotta. What colour would be best to give it some life please? I have added a couple of pictures of the kitchen, but they aren't very good. But they do show the colours of the cupboards and work tops.

Can't say I'm much better when it comes to choosing colours, Linda, but what do you think about a very pale tan? Same tone as the back splash tiles but much lighter? I'm glad you posted pictures as there's lots going on in that room: cupboards, walls, counter, chrome appliance, white appliance, black appliances, white window trim .... A little something on the walls to create a bit more unity / calm might be just the thing?

Good luck!

I would suggest a color away from the browns. Staying in the "brown" family is just being safe and not very inspiring. I would start with hues (colors) in colors that you are attracted to. Look in your closet and find the common color or the color that you feel your best in and one that you receive lots of compliments when you wear it. As an artist and art educator my home has many colors and I feel joy every time I go from one room to another. I play with colors in and outside of my home and you should too! Your kitchen cabinets and appliances are nice and neutral play with colors.

Go to your favorite home depot type and pick up paint chips and or small sample containers of colors. With the paint chips just tape your selection of paint chip colors in an area on the wall that you will see without effort an observe how the lighting over the day effects that color. Is the color enhanced? Darkened or lightened? How does that color play with the surrounding colors? Cool colors (on the color wheel: blues, greens and purples, calm while warm colors (reds, oranges and yellows)can rive us up. Have you ever notice the colors used in hospitals where emotions tend to be high?

I think a blue or a blue/gray would look nice in your kitchen. It is a matter of preference. A bright color would also enhance the dark counter tops. I really don't like the color swatches at the paint stores because they are so small.

I think bringing in colors from your wardrobe might give you a better idea.

Thank you for your feedback Linda & Rose. There is a bit much going on in the small room. I will have a look for some of the colours you have mentioned and see what comes up.
