Fresh is best, but I have used pure lemon juice from a bottle. Sun always helped with lightening. Use sun screen so your skin doesn't burn, including your scalp. Just be careful not to get lotion on the hair or it could negate the lemon juice's efficacy.
Either one will do. The combination of the sun and the lemon lighten the hair.
