Looking For Good, Inexpensive Internet Service Provider?

I was wondering what internet service everyone finds is the best to use. We are looking for a new service, we have had it with AOL, not only are they expensive, but when we called to cancel their service, the customer service rep. gave us such a hassle, my husband was on the phone for 20 mins trying to get them to cancel then when he asked to speak to a supervisor, the rep.

told him it wasn't a supervisor matter. Finally they cancelled the AOL. We'd like a internet service that is inexpensive and has better customer service. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have found the local services are much more reliable, and the customer service is definitely better. I have only used 2 services in 6 years, but my sister has used several, and without exception, she had to fight with every single one to get them to stop charging her bank account after she canceled. One of them even took money out of our Mother's account after my sister had cancelled her checking account.(it was a joint account, but nonetheless they didn't have authorization.

With a local service, you don't have to give them a credit card number usually, so that cannot happen. Most local services will let you stop in the office and pay by check or by cash. And if you have a problem, they are more available. The big ones will ignore your emails for help and leave you floundering. Good customer service is very important.

If you have broadband or dsl AOL actually has a good price for their service 9.95. If you dont netscape and netzero are both around 10 a month. Hope this helped you out.

We are happy with Juno- I honestly think aol messed up our computer- through once they did send us a free motum because their software doesn't run well with ours. I told them I was unhappy that their help was in India instead of US>

I hope you asked the AOL rep for your confirmation number...i fought with them for six months. I called and cancelled and got the same treatment and when i still kept getting charged...they finally told me that "you have to request the confirmation number or its not officially cancelled" I love my computer, but i will give it up before i go back to AOL!!!

www.650dialup.com/

I've paid for them for my parents for 2 years. Never had a problem. No hidden charges and they're always up.

Never got a busy signal. $6.50 flat rate every month. Price will never go up. Never had a problem. I highly highly recommend.

We use the cable which isn't cheap but is good. I was writting to say that Dawn is right - please check to make sure AOL isn't still charging you. They gave us the runaround and it took quite a while to clear up. I wouldn't use them ever again just because of their customer 'service'.

We like our Charter broadband a lot. (charter.net) It is 29.99 per month. Before that, we had MyExcel dial-up. (myexcel.com) They had great customer service and a lot of access numbers. I can't remember how much it cost though... 15.99 per month maybe?

I've been with Mailaka for about a year. I've never had a problem with them. There is no download so it doesn't take up space on your computer. It's only $6.95 per month. And you can use their online email or interface your email client (I have Outlook Express) so you can use that instead.

I had trouble in the beginning getting my Outlook Express to work so I emailed their help desk, they got back to me right away and continued to work with me until we finally got it working. www.mailaka.net/

I use usadatanet.net for $9.95 a month. It is also my long distance provider for phone service. I can call across the river or all over the USA for only 99 cents a call. I am extremely pleased with both of their services.

I've been using NetZero for almost 10 years now and I've never had a problem with it. I pay $9.95 a month for unlimited service and no pop-up ads. NetZero and Juno are owned by the same parent company, so you could check out both to see what dial-up numbers are available for your area. Good luck!

I have used PeoplePc for over a year now, with no problems and with auto pay it runs 9.95/mo. They have been very helpful with technical support and you need to check to make sure that the number you choose to dial up with is within your calling area through your phone company, so there are no unexpected charges for long distance.

I like Lifeline.net. They are a Christian ISP but you don't have to get filtered internet if you don't wish. It is 14.95 with the web accelerater for dial up. I rarely have problems signing on.

I would strongly urge anyone NOT to use Mailaka.net. They took money from my account, then cut off my service for non-payment. When I contacted them (five times) I got no response. Their phone is never answered, and they also took out additional funds out of my account a week after they cut my service for another month of service, yet took out more money (unauthorized) 8 days after cutting my service that was pre paid.

Rebecca, Ive used Netzero......its a good service....You might find this funny!! but..BlueLight.com..if its still around..from K-mart..depending on where you live..ive had AT&T DSL..and it was less than $14.00 a month..Grat you can use the internet and phone same time..no miss calls..BUT..if you dont have DSL..i recommend getting CallWave.. or one like it.. when a call comes in..it pops up right on your monitor.....its basiclly an answering machine.Pretty cheap too..around.$ 4.50 a month..

HOW ABOUT FREE ISP! In the state of Michigan, there is a new FREE dial-up and here is where you go
http://www.dialinfree.net They are wonderful and I haven't had a prob--for the entire state of Michigan

Juno is great---they have a special going rite now for dial-up unlimited--$4.97 for the first three months and then only $9.99 a mo. thereafter. Never had one prob with them. If you go for the special--say I referred you and it would be nice to get some cash from them for a referral
my juno username is theoannie AT juno.com Appreciate it.

I tried peoplepc.com -horrid- The software was so messed up--will never go to them again. OK--most people don't realize this about Callwave but it's there, ya just don't notice it.

CALLWAVE ALERT It's so much cheaper than regular callwave
$17.95 per YEAR! YUP, YEAR plus a one-time fee of $10--that's it. It will still notify you when someone is calling in, but you won't be able to stop and talk to them until you go offline and call them back yourself--but it's soo cheap.l
http://www.buzzme.com used to have a service just like CAllwave---but believe it's now $14.95 per YR. for the same plan I just told you about at CAllwave. Check it out! There are cheaper ways around everything if ya hunt!

One last thing---go to http://www.freedomlist.com
To find cheap, or maybe free ISP's--it's a great list
One other ISP I nearly forgot about--they allowed me to be a test person for it when it was free http://www.dialup.cc.com I think it's .com
It's now only like $4.97 for unlimited and all the time I was a tester, it was awesome and I could always get in.

NONE OF THESE ABOVE REQUIRE SPECIAL SOFTWARE--JUST DO A DIAL-UP FOR THEM IN SETTINGS Annie

I just want to share a few observations to update Annie's (theoann8886) excellent post.

http://www.juno.com recently introduced a lower rate plan at $6.95 monthly for the first year, which equals $83.40. The old special offer totalled $104.46 annually. It seems Juno's special offers frequently change. After the first year Juno is $9.95/month. By the way, it appears Juno is owned by NetZero.

I checked out http://www.freedomlist.com and was a bit overwhelmed. It took me a while to figure out how to use the site. I also learned their list of Internet Service Providers is not kept up to date. I encountered several dead links to ISPs that have gone out of business. But I think FreedomList is still generally a good reference for cheap dial-up Internet services. Regarding free ISP's, I found http://www.ispbargains.com has the most up to date list of free ISP's. I know this because I spent an entire evening searching for a free dial-up service! Unfortunately I didn't find a decent free ISP for Chicago...

Last night I checked out http://www.dialup.cc and found it was sold to another company on March 1. What used to be $4.94/month is now $7.99/month.

My sister in Michigan uses http://dialinfree.net and agrees with Annie. It is a wonderful free ISP! To use the free service you must be lucky enough to live in the Water & Winter Wonderland (Michigan).

I have peoplepc, and I think they are THE WORST provider, and in the last four months my connection is so slow, it is awful. Peoplepc disconnects you every four hours like it or not. When you play a lot of online scrabble, you hate it when you get disconnected! They are so slow I can almost send real mail as quick as email with peoplepc.
