No, I do not think this will work at all. I think it is better to just whip up a batch of marshmallow cream frosting for your cake. You will be changing the canned frosting too much and this can cause it to be runny or taste horrible.
If you put marshmallows in canned frosting you would get lumps of marshmallows in the frosting--which could be good if you cut up some Hershey bars and graham crackers you could have a modified "s'more" icing which could be amazing, but it would not be a fluffy marshmallow frosting.

I find it cheaper in the long run to buy a Pillsbury Marshmallow Frosting. It is one of the few times I buy a name brand and only when I get coupons.
You can if you melt the marshmallows with butter and whip it til it's smooth then whip in the frosting, but it won't be like the wonderful marshmallow cream frosting you're thinking of. You'll have some consistency issues especially after it sits a bit.
