Making a Felt Heart Hair Clip

Felt Heart Hair Clip - closeup of heart hairclipTransform a basic hair clip into a pretty hair ornament using just felt and thread. You can make your hair clip as plain or as fancy as you like.



  • 1 snap hairclip
  • red felt
  • contrasting embroidery thread
  • embroidery needle
  • pen
  • scissors
  • scrap paper
Felt Heart Hair Clip - supplies


  1. Fold the scrap paper and draw half a heart at the fold. Use the hairclip to guage the size of the heart.
  2. Felt Heart Hair Clip - fold paper in half and using the clip as a gauge, draw half a heart shape on the fold
  3. Cut out the heart.
  4. Felt Heart Hair Clip - cut out the paper shape
  5. Check that the clip fits inside the heart with space to spare.
  6. Felt Heart Hair Clip - double check size of heart to the clip
  7. Draw around the heart on the felt.
  8. Felt Heart Hair Clip - trace the heart onto red felt

  9. Cut out the felt heart.

  11. Cut out another heart to match.
  12. Felt Heart Hair Clip - make a second one
  13. Place the clip in the middle of one of the hearts and make marks either side with the pen to show where you will need to insert the clip.
  14. Felt Heart Hair Clip - position the clip and mark both sides as shown
  15. Make a little snip between the marks.

  17. Open out the clip and insert it in the hole.

  19. Snap the clip shut.

  21. Place the other heart on top.
  22. Felt Heart Hair Clip - cover with the other heart, encasing the clip
  23. Sew the hearts together with the embroidery thread.
  24. Felt Heart Hair Clip - stitch the two felt hearts together with embroidery floss, here using a running stitch
  25. I used a double running stitch, but you can use any stitch you like.
  26. Felt Heart Hair Clip - continue and make a second row of the running stitch

  27. If you want to make a matching pair, don't forget the have the clip facing the opposite way on the second heart.

    Now you have learned to make this, you can be more adventurous and try different shapes and different or more intricate stitches.
