What is the best way to keep mosquitoes off my dog?
By Chris from Antelope, CA
Can't vouch for this, but I've heard you can put a few drops of cider vinegar in the dog's water bowl and also give the dog a bit of garlic. Would caution you to check with your vet before doing this, however. I just read these ideas elsewhere, so I have no idea if they really work. Good luck!

My dog and I love to walk by the river in the evening. However, the mosquitoes are terrible. Does anybody have a safe home remedy to repel mosquitoes for my dog? And once she is bitten she scratches and scratches and seems miserable! Does anybody know a remedy to relieve her itching? We are also planning to walk away from the water and during the day when there are less mosquitoes.

I would try that old stand-by SkinSoSoft from Avon. I don't know if they still make the powder, but that's what I keep in the motorhome for all of us. If not, dilute the SSS with water and spray it on the dog. That should do the trick. (08/14/2006)
Have you asked your Vet?

http://www.naturalanimal.com/dogflea.php-the: Herbal Shampoo and Dip Concentrates is what I use for my 3 dogs. I have no flea or mosquito problems. It's concentrated so a bottle goes a long way. (08/14/2006)
I know most people think this is an old wives tale, but it works. I have always given my pets (dogs and cats) garlic and brewers yeast. It keeps away fleas, flies, ticks, and mosquitoes. I use the 8 in 1 tabs by Excel as it also has omega 3 fatty acids for their skin and coat. You do have to give it year round so it stays in the system. Most vets (I worked for vet a number of years and we kind of had little fights over this working or not) will tell you this does not work. However I have used it for well over 30 years raising toy Poodles and Labs and never had a flea or insect problem in all that time. You can buy this at Pet Smart or go online to order. Here is link for Pet Smart I get it there as it does not cost as much as other places.

Oh, yes as last lady said do give your dog heart worm meds even if my garlic and yeast works I still want to make sure my dogs are protected from heart worms. (08/14/2006)
Our vet told us to get "FLYS OFF" spray at any pet store, it works great. I got some for our doggies and they are not bothered anymore when they go outside. It just takes a light spray on their coats. Hope this helps. And be sure to give heartworm medication all year, you most certainly do not want your dog to get heartworm, it is not a good thing. (08/14/2006)
First give your dog RX HEARTGARD from your vet, you don't want heartworms! They will kill your dog. If the bugs are bad for my dog when we go to the park, I spray her bandanna with AVON bug repellent, then myself. NEVER spray this right on the dog! It works. Remember the Heartguard. (08/14/2006)
Please get your dog on heartworm meds. They are very deadly and very costly to treat.
I have had good success using Vick's Vaporub to keep mosquitoes and flies off my dog. Just rub it in your hands and all over the dog. It even keeps them off me when I'm working outside. I think I read that tip on ThriftyFun, as a matter of fact. Another tip that I read, but have not tried is using a Bounce fabric softener sheet as a repellent.
By Susan M.
I have the same problem here in AZ after a heavy rain and I use the Bounce fabric softener sheet to rub on my 2 dogs and myself. My husband is an avid fisherman and we've bought some of the most expensive "dope" you can get on the market. He went fishing with a friend and didn't want to put the mosquito repellent on himself because of the friend's allergies, so he took the fabric softener sheet, rubbed his face and exposed areas of his arms and then on his clothes. He said about 4 dozen mosquitoes swarmed him, but none lit on him. So the fabric softener sheet works on animals as well as humans. I don't know if it works on flies or not, but isn't it worth a try? Use vinegar on the mosquito bites on you and the little dog, it stops the itching almost instantly. (08/15/2006)

I called my vet and they said that there is a very low risk for my dog to get heartworm here (Laramie, WY) and that they have not had any cases yet this year. Also, since it will probably freeze here in a few weeks that will kill off most of the mosquitoes. And they will be having a heart worm clinic in May and I can go to that to get her screened and then on meds for next summer. Thank you all for the advice!

Be careful giving your dog brewers yeast if you have a larger dog, particularly barrel-chested. The yeast can create gas that may cause bloat. (06/21/2008)
We live in the northwest were we constantly deal with mosquitoes. We have found Cedar-Al. There is a shampoo and spray. We use the spray when we are leaving the dogs and it may get dark. We have Boxers, they don't have very thick fur. Ceadar-Al is all natural and nontoxic and bio-degradable. It is actually made from fallen cedars in the northwest. When you spray them or wash them it helps from invasion of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, bees, ants, spiders, dust mites, and most other pests. It smells like cedar. Not so much when you wash, but when you spray. We spray every time we will be out in the evening. Instead of 20+ bites, they may get 2. I swear by it. (08/16/2008)
Put a few drops of apple cider vinegar in the pets drinking water. Experiment with amount of drops. After a few days mosquitoes will avoid your pet. (09/19/2008)

Regarding the brewers yeast tabs, my 4 dogs get them daily. I buy them from cherrybrook.com and pay about $8.99, or less, a bottle. They are the mega tabs that are given 1 tab per 50 pounds and there are 216 tabs per bottle. When you get the smaller tabs you have to give a lot more. These tabs help with shedding, shiny coats, and my dogs have never had fleas. It does NOT keep ticks off of them or mosquitoes, and all four are on Heartguard. Just wanted to let you know. Here are 3 of my 4 babies. (04/06/2010)
