Your reverse level is stuck in the down position and is not moving so the machine can go forward and not reverse. You'll need to check the level and if you can't get it unstuck from the outside of the machine you'll need to remove the cover and check the level from the inside. A lot of time a small drop of oil can cure this problem or there could be a broken part that is causing this.

This may be caused by a bobbin housing that has loose threads and fabric due to buildup. This will cause a machine to malfunction. Try cleaning and detangling and start over.

This is an older thread but maybe someone else will need assistance with this problem.
Sewing machines differ in many ways so it's possible one solution may not work for all brands.

I've purchased older machines and sometimes they have not been used for several years and some functions may have become 'frozen'. If this is the case, many times you can take a hair dryer and blow hot air on the area and it will loosen the old oil/gunk so the parts will move but that's the time to take it apart for a good cleaning.
This problem can be caused and fixed in several ways but it may take a sewing tech to give you instructions. You can try joining this site to see if they can help:

If you need a manual you can check Janome as they make New Home machines. I'm not sure but it appears the New Home and Janome 6000 are the same but you can look at this manual to see.
("In 1960, ninety-three years after Barker and Clark first collaborated, New Home and the 'New Home' brand were purchased by the Janome Sewing Machine Company of Tokyo, Japan.")

For other problems it is always a good idea to join some of the sewing machine forums, especially if it is an older machine (such as this one - late 1980's) as the members can help with almost any problem and they can usually understand what you're trying to say is wrong. They also know what questions to ask.

You can join these sites no matter what brand/type of machine you have.
