I have been using my Pfaff machine recently, and the last few times I notice the presser foot lever is not working properly. It seems to have disconnected inside and today will not even lift the presser foot at all. It just goes right round. Could this be something serious?

It is probably a broken spring or lever. You should take it in for servicing

I find I am able to do many easy fixes myself...so hopefully the video will help (and I am NOT a handy person). If this YouTube video doesn't help there are lot of them out there!

The Pfaff synchrotronic 1229 is a very sophisticated machine and has a lot of very intricate "workings" so if you are not sure about what to do you should find a Pfaff professional and have your machine serviced. They will fix this problem during the servicing of your machine.
