Puppy Not Eating?

Puppy Not Eating - black and tan puppyI brought my dog, a six week old Australian Kelpie Bull Arab mix, two days ago. I am confused why he is not eating his dry dog food. He is trying to though. All that I feed him is Pedigree Puppy and milk 3 times a day since he can't eat. What should I do about this and what should I feed him?

The food may be too hard for him. I would ask the vet.

He sure is cute!
This is a very young puppy and may not be able to eat enough dry food for the nourishment he needs.
You should call whoever you bought/got him from and find out what they were feeding him.

  • You should mix a little water with his dry food until he can eat the dry food by itself.
  • Maybe at 8 weeks he will be able to properly eat the dry food.

  • Do not give him cow's milk as it could give him diarrhea.
  • From a vet website:
  • Puppy food can then be slowly introduced by mixing one part water with 3 parts food to make it easier to digest. From week 7 they should be fully weaned from their mother, able to eat dry puppy food and be able to lap water. You can feed your puppy with good quality of pup food. Your 6-week old pup does not need any milk supplements at this age. You can increase the number of meals in the 8th week but not before that. Also, do not overfeed your puppy.
  • Here is a link for basic care for this young puppy.

  • He is going to need to see a vet very soon to start his very necessary first year shots/vaccinations.

Sweet pup! Is this what the person you got him from recommended for food?

I ask because most vets discourage milk for dogs. They usually recommend softening dry food with warm water or no salt, low fat beef broth.

This is worthy of a vet consult as even in puppies as there could be a medical condition causing him not to eat. Anything from separation anxiety from the adoption to teething issues to a hernia.

Let us know how it goes!

Perhaps the vet can give you a good substitute for the puppy's mom's milk.
