Question About Survivor Benefits?

My mother and I both receive survivor's benefits since my dad passed away. I'm disabled and am 63 years old and my mother is 93. She receives $1,680 monthly and I receive $1,299. Why is there the difference and will my amount change when she passes away? Also, will I receive survivor's benefits on her behalf when she passes? I ask these things because I never understood the workings of anything the SS system does and being totally disabled I'm a bit afraid of my future.

I believe the best thing you can do is to make an appoint with SS. They are the only ones who can answer all these questions for you. It is almost impossible for one of us to give you the correct answer. All we can do is give you an idea of what could or couldn't happen. It is up to SS to tell you the facts about your case. I would make an appointment and talk with one of the people in the office. Good luck and I hope you can find your answers to this.

Your mother's portion is based on your fathers contributions while he worked. As his wife, she gets more. Since you disabled, your benefits are still based on your father, so if your mother dies it can't affect you negatively.

I would make an appointment with social security. You may even be entitled to more when she passes, especially if she took care of you.

Your mother is receiving benefits from your father based on a wife's benefits and your benefit is based on a disabled child's benefit. These are entirely different benefits.

Step 1
Your mother's benefits could be up to 100% of the amount your father would have received if he was still living.

Step 2
Your mother's benefit could also include extra benefits for caring for a disable child that is also receiving benefits.

Step 3
Your mother's benefits will stop completely when she dies.

Step 4
You may be eligible for the $255 lump sum death/burial payment when your mother dies.

Step 5
Your monthly benefit amount may or may not change after your mother's death and SS is the only agency that can give you the correct information about this.

Is there another person, other than your mother, assisting with your care or will you be on your on when your mother dies? Hopefully you and your mother are living in a paid for home and living expenses will not include having to make mortgage/rental payments. If you find this is your total income then you may need someone to help you with your financial business so as insure that all necessary payments are made each month/year.
You should make an appointment with SS (have someone with you that understands all of this and can ask any questions so you will feel secure with your living conditions.
