Removing a Piece of Glass Embedded in Your Skin?

I've got glass in my hand. It's been there for a while about 2-3 years. Will it surface and come out by it self or will I need to get it taken out by surgery.

Two to three years... your skin has already healed with the glass in it, so you're going to need to have it removed professionally.

I was in a car accident when I was 16 and I am now 65. I had shards of glass from the windshield imbedded into my forehead that the doctor could not remove. A few years later, I was still picking glass out of my forehead and this lasted about 6 weeks.

All my scars eventually healed and disappeared until a month ago and now I am again picking up pieces of glass out of my forehead. Hopefully, this will be the last time. Not a lot you can do about it

It will not come out by itself. You have skin that healed over it. A doctor will have to take care of it.

Occasionally, a piece of glass or a splinter that has been under the skin for a long time will work itself to the surface but I would not wait or count on this happening.

  • You should make an appointment with your doctor or go to one of the walk-in clinics and let them x-ray your hand and they will make a decision about how to proceed.
  • Sometimes people use "drawing salve" from a pharmacy but since this has been under your skin for this length of time I do not think any "home" remedy will work.
  • Here is a link to a site called "Ask the Doctor" and you can fill out the form and a doctor will answer your question. This service is free.

I think it's best to visit the clinic or doctors to see if its severe.

If it was a week or two I would say yes this can happen. Now the skin is healed and the glass will remain inside and it isn't possible to come out now.

You'll need it removed by a doctor if you want to get it out now.

I got a tiny piece of pencil led stuck in thumb when I was in elementary school. I can still feel it. It feels like a little teeny hard spot but has not ever caused me a problem. I am now 47 and never had any health problems what so ever and feel like I am 30. It's been a good entertaining story to spark conversation.
