Rescued Cat Taught to Use Bathtub as Litterbox?

We took in a cat, Charlotte, from someone not fit to take care of himself due to mental illness and laziness. We are angry about how badly he treated the cat. He never showed cat boundaries, never ever cleaned the litter box, let bad habits go on, ie. table jumping.

Charlotte got here 5 days ago and is doing great on everything - except she won't use the litter box. She was used to the bathtub and won't stop that. We're doing the careful - put poo in the right place and carefully admonish and show her where to go. We don't want to cause more problems. Our other dear cat is trying to convince her too, I swear. We are going to try to keep tub wet, but Charlotte never was taught or encouraged to use litter box.

She is around 4 yrs old. She is healthy. She is a sweet cat. We rescued her from his family taking her to the Humane Society. No one else will keep her. We understand it is going wrong because this is how he taught her, but we need this to end. We have 2 boxes, no room for another and she is getting along with our other 2 cats. Please advise how to deal with this.

Good on you for taking Charlotte in. She clearly needed a friend. I suggest a couple of things. Dont use covered boxes (they frighten some cats). Use big litter boxes. Limit or eliminate the scolding. Unless you correct her in 10 seconds she has no idea what you are getting at and can become more confused and frightened. Make sure the boxes are in a quiet, secure place the cats can get to easily. Perhaps one near the bathtub. With her new and very different environment she is dealing with a lot of stress. 5 days is not enough for this stress level to go down.

It will take a couple weeks at best. At that point she will be able to focus and change some habits with a little help. The more you do to help her relax the faster they will move along. My "grandkitten" came to stay for awhile and he is known for peeing on the rug. I got a litter called Dr. Elseys Cat Attract. He has been here 4 months now and has never missed the box. I recommend the product. You can get it from Chewy online or higher end pet stores. Be patient with Charlotte. You are doing a wonderful thing for her., and she knows it.

We are blessed with Charlotte. She is a very sweet cat. If we only have a tub issue, well it could be worse. She doesn't pee around the house. That would be more than awful as it would literally destroy our unfinished hardwood floors.

We know this is not her fault that the previous owner did her wrong. I am so angry at him. We tried to get him to treat his cat better but only suceeded at least in making sure he fed her regularly. It helps that we have always been good friends with Charlotte and that our cats smells are familiar as he lived in the same house, different apt. We have stopped showing her the tub & box for 2 reasons. It wasn't working. And she was ok enough when I, a female, told her no, but when my husband gently did the same, she flinched and hid. We don't know exactly how bad she was treated. I agree about the litter boxes. But we only have 1 place they could be put, wish it were otherwise. As for being stressed out, we thought it would be weeks too but we are lucky. As a week & 3 days I believe, she doesn't appear stressed, she explores all the rooms, begs for table scraps with the other kitties, and best of all, all 3 cats cuddled with us at the same time close together as us humans woke up!

Didn't think that would happen so quick or at all. Our cat Shadow wouldn't let it go until they were friends. She would meow talk to Charlotte each night until it seemed Charlotte knew she wasn't being threatened. I am so proud of Shadow being so actively kind It helped a lot. They all get along! Now we are trying 2 things. We are trying to keep the tub wet as a deterrent. And we are hoping through kindness & her stomach, she will want to do the right thing. We will try whatever we can. I hope there is more we could do... We didn't think about 4yrs of being taught wrong would stop immediately but course it would be nice. I am hopeful. Yesterday when she went, it was just before a time it is daily changed so the boxes weren't the best. And what she left was dramatically less then all the other times. Think she is eating the same... But we will find out. I am probably getting my hopes up. We will see what happens this evening. Thank you very much for your reply.

Yes, yes, yes! We're having the same issue and this is enormously helpful just to know we aren't alone in tackling it! We recently got a 2-year old cat from a shelter who was taken out of a hoarding situation. This is day 4 that Hallie has been with us, so I know it's early days yet. The first night we put her in the spare room with the door shut and 2 litter boxes and she used both. After that we let the door open so she could wander the upstairs and explore. We have another cat Casey, who sleeps downstairs at night. They're getting used to each other with just a bit of growling and hissing from her - he's not too bothered.

The last 3 nights she's left a poop deposit in the tub and also pee the first night she was out. We put a litter box in the tub the second night and she pee'd in that - yea! Last night we put a second box in the tub and she still pooped near the drain, but is willing to pee in the box. The tub is at least easy to clean, but I'd like to get her going in the box all the same. What's worked for others??

Put the litter box in the bathtub and slowly move it.

It sounds like your advice would work if our cat didn't know what a litter box was or if she was a dog needing to be paper trained. Or if she was a kitten.

She is 4yrs old. I know she knows that she should go in the box. We've shown her and as we showed her one time, one of other cats demonstrated right then... Our other cat has been like an ambassador. When a male person showed her kindly [exactly like me a female did], she flinched and ran away to hide.
All 3 cats get along for the most part. It is amazing. So it is not a problem because of them either. Thank you for your advice

Jackson Galaxy from Cat from Hell has great tips on teaching a cat to use a litter box www.thehappylitterbox.com/.../

I wonder if it's a good idea to put the litter in the tub as that just perpetuates the fact that the tub is a good pooping venue?

I agree litter in the tub wouldn't work. I look forward to check out the resource you gave. I glanced at it and it looked great! Thank you!
