Singer 5528 Won't Sew Zig-Zag Stitch?

I have just received an old Singer 5528 machine that I have cleaned and oiled, but when I turn the stitch knob to say zig-zag nothing happens. It just sews straight. Can I fix this myself or do I need a professional?

Make sure you have no thread blockage. If you still have the problem, the knob or the piece behind it may be broken and you will need to have it serviced.

Hi Judy
Thanks for helping me, I dreamt I had 200 replies in ten minutes LOLS. I have pulled the thing apart and up top when I turn the knob the cogs change to another cog. But its like to doesnt talk to the actual needle arm.

It wants to do something as sometiimes it looks thicker thread but its locked in straight stitch. I have oiled it with my clipper oil EVERYWHERE :) Julie
