How to make an easy, cheap, quick applesauce for Fall!

Total Time: 4 Hours

Yield: 10-12 servings

Ingredients:

  • 20 assorted apples
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup water

Steps:

  1. Choose 20 assorted apples.
  2. Break off stems.
  3. Core and cut all apples.
  4. Ad

  5. Add apples, water, cinnamon and sugar to crock pot.
  6. Simmer on low heat for four hours.
  7. Mash apples in crock pot after four hours.
  8. Puree' applesauce in food processor.
  9. Ad

  10. Enjoy!

Granny Smith apples are great for making applesauce. This applesauce has the perfect balance of tart and sweet.

Ingredients:

  • 8-10 Granny Smith apples
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Steps:

  1. Wash and dry the apples. Use a potato peeler to peel the apples.
  2. Use a knife or an apple slicer to core and slice the apples.
  3. Cube the apples and put them into the crockpot.
  4. Add the brown sugar, water, and cinnamon. Stir to coat the apples.
  5. Cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours or on LOW for 7-8 hours. Stirring occasionally.
  6. Once apples are tender, use a potato masher to get the desired consistency. Allow to cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator (up to 5 days).

It is so nice to have apple season approaching. What to do with all those apples? An easy way to make a very sensible applesauce or apple butter is to use your crock pot. No sugar is necessary here, just peel (or partially peel) your apples. Slice in chunks and place them high into your crock pot, add a bit of cinnamon, or even a dash of nutmeg, and cook on low until this has reached your desired consistency. Use or freeze leftover applesauce.

This is also a fantastic way to do up strawberries. Again, no sugar added, cooking up the cleaned strawberries in your crock pot produces the most delicious strawberry jam, all without sugar. You can also add this to your homemade yogurt for a delicious treat.

I look forward to Honeycrisp apple season every year. I wanted to try making homemade applesauce and what better apple for that than Honeycrisps!
