My electric typewriter (the Smith Corona 240DLE) does not type complete letters anymore. I can't even type full words that I can read. I've read some questions on the site. It might be the hammer, and I might need a new ribbon, but is there anything else I should know?

Definitely not the ribbon... tried that. Did u ever find out what was the cause? I'm having the same trouble.
I would think either the hammer or a worn out ribbon.
Thank you judy!! I type the end and the h will be replaced by two lines. This happens inconsistently it could be a whole word sometimes nothing but a mess to look at.
It does that with me and sometime when I press the shift it makes a buzzing sound.
I love the sound of a typewriter. It is sad when the have issues. It could be just as simple as it needing a new cleaning or you are correct it could just need a ribbon (they still sell them on eBay).

There are two possibilities: printwheel wear and hammer alignment. If you can move the printwheel from side to side, it means the plastic alignment protrusion(s) on the printwheel are worn. Replace with a new printwheel or put epoxy into the circular mounting hole, remount the printwheel, and wait for the epoxy to cure. If the hammer does not align with the printwheel characters, you can adjust the hammer side to side.
