Troubleshooting Electrical Circuit Problems?

No breakers are tripped, but I have no power at an outlet in one room and at the overhead lights in two other rooms.

This sounds like you have a short in your wiring.

  1. You are going to need to shut off the electricity to your home first.
  2. In the room that you don't have any power at the outlet. Remove the screws and take the face plate off.
  3. Undo the two screws holding the outlet in place.
  4. Remove this from the wall and check the wires to the outlet.
  5. You might need to change this outlet out. I would change it if I were you.
  6. Go to the hardware store and buy a new wall outlet and install it in your home.
  7. Start with the outlet first and power back on your fuse box. Now check the outlet using a lamp to test if you have a good connection now.

  9. If this doesn't work and you have checked your wiring you might need to get a electric cable tester and test the cables in your home for current.
  10. I would check the light switches in the two rooms and make sure they are fine and you don't need to replace the switches either.
  11. If you can't find the short on your own you will have to call an electrician to come and help you test the electric wiring in your home.
