Using a Brother SX4000 Typewriter in France?

I moved to France in 2012 and brought my Brother SX4000 with me. I only recently pulled it out and tried to use it with a converter US to EUR. the typewriter clicked and then powered off. Is it beyond repair because of neglect? Are the power sources not compatible with a simple plug converter? Do I need to get an actual amp converter? Any other trouble shooting you could recommend?

Thanks. It will be super hard for me to get it repaired in France and I don't want to buy one here with a French keyboard.

Thanks!

If you didn't plug the converter into your typewriter first and then plugged it into the wall you may have shorted it out.

I do not know about power sources and what is going on with that...do you have an electrician you know who can tell you if you may have shorted it?

I do know a bit about typewriters and when they sit for years they gum up and don't work. Sometimes a good cleaning is all you need.

There are a lot of good YouTube videos out there. Here is one search:

When you are doing your cleaning, if you have microfiber rags they work well. If you use all cotton, try to find one that doesn't make more lint as lint and type writers are not compatible.

Post back with an update on what you learn! I hope it is just a simple cleaning needed.

Does your typewriter have the voltage printed on it? If so, what does it say?

US appliances run on 110 volts, while EU run on 220 volts. Most appliances or gadgets are considered dual voltage and will run on both & a converter should work just fine.

Check to see what the back of your typewriter says. If it says 110-220, you should be able to get it fixed. If it only says 110, the converter may not have been able to do its job and you may have fried it :(.

Its not too much help, but its a start. At least you can maybe get an idea if it was just from your typewriter not being able to handle the voltage.

I hope for your sake its not fried and its a simple fix! Let us know what ya find out!

Good luck!

Your typewriter probably needs a good cleaning as well a check on what happened with the converter.

I feel sure there are typewriter repair shops in France and the language should not make a difference. If you cannot Google and find a shop then try going to a store that sells office equipment and ask for a referral.

You might even be able to take it to a small appliance repair shop to find out about the converter.
