Value of New Book of Knowledge Encyclopedias?

I have a complete set of the New Book of Knowledge that is in excellent condition, from 1988. I was wondering what it would be worth?

Thank you.

Without a photo it is not possible to give a 100% match to yours for value.

Right now there are none on any of the sites I use, eBay or sites like Worthpoint that match the year and are sold.

My best recommendation is to take yours, type in the book name into eBay, click on the completed and sold button (to the left of the screen) and check back weekly to find a set that matches your exactly. That will give you that day's current market value as sold is what someone paid. Never us asking price because people can ask what they want, sold tells you what someone actually paid for the item.

Generally the "newer" encyclopedia values between 99 cents and $75 dollars. You will sometimes see them sold for 100 dollars, but if you look, these are "free" shipping, which means the seller pays shipping and since the money from the sale for postage goes to the post office not your pocket, you (the seller) net between 50 and 75 after postage and the various fees.

1988 is a recent set. People are only interested in antiques. I would say this has very little value. You may be better off financially donating it and taking the tax deduction.

New Book of Knowledge is primarily a set for children ages 8-13 or in grades 3-8th so this set would generally only appeal to someone with children (homeschoolers maybe?) or someone learning English as a second language.

This is a very limited group of potential buyers so most likely the value will be low and probably never increase.

  • I did find listings for a 1987 and a 1989 set which seem to be about the same value as there is nothing exceptional about either of these 3 sets. These listings have not sold but you can put a watch on them to see if they sell.
  • We have no way to tell how long books are listed as book sellers tend to leave books listed for months and even years (not unusual) as most books and especially sets of encyclopedias, are usually very slow sellers, if they ever sell at all.
  • It is difficult to find even a place to donate this type of set as thrift stores and book sales will not usually accept them as they just take up space and bring in no money.

  • If you are really interested in selling them, I would suggest you list them on Craigslist or USA4Sale and see if you can find an interested party.
  • Try them at a higher price and lower the price if necessary.
