What Breed Is My Dog?

What Breed Is My Dog?I got Frankie at the shelter 4 weeks ago and she has gone from 6 lbs to 21 lbs. They told me she was a Boxer mix, but I'm not sure what she is mixed with. I was thinking Lab?

Seems every day someone sends a question asking the breed of their dog; sometimes several questions each day. Almost all of the time, no one provides an answer as most people are not trained in dog breeding or species identification. Usually the request includes a picture which might help, however, some of the pictures show little more than a dog shape and color.

Let's get my credentials out of the way: for over 40 years I was an AKC registered breeder of Boxer dogs (companion, with one or two over the years doing rather well in the show rings:) and also did breed rescue for several years as well. I live in the UK permanently after relocating from the US in 2010.

Now. About your adorable puppy:)

Looks like a Boxer-Lab to my experienced eye from what I can see in the snaps you've posted, but what does the vet (who should ALWAYS be your No1 go-to unless something he/she does sets off the warning bells in your head) say?

Also, do an image search using the two breeds as your search term to see if any of the images that come back look like your pup.

I do see a possible white blaze on the chest - if that's there, also check Boxer-Border Collie. I am leaning towards Black Lab but if there is a bit of white on the dog, there is something else in the gene pool.

To be 100% sure, a canine DNA will end all doubts - and the results may be very surprising. Recently a dog owner who'd asked about an utterly adorable dog found through DNA testing that her dog is something none of us imagined.

The colours, coat, and body shape were completely different from what the dog's DNA said it is, none of us (and most of us with years and decades of experience:) would have guessed!
