Well, he looks a wee bit like my boy, Elmer. He was a rescue dog also, but looks exactly like a black mouth cur.

I think your boy is a mix of something really handsome for sure. Maybe pit, cur, other bull breed, very possibly boxer?
I was just reading an article a couple of days ago regarding how many mix breed strays are getting mis-identified as pitties because of facial features. Not that there's anything wrong with pitties, I love them.
