What Breed Is My Dog?

We adopted our little 9 week old puppy from a shelter. They said that she is a Boxer mix and her mom was a Boxer, but the dad is unknown. She is 14 lbs. We'd love to know your opinion about the mix. Thanks in advance.

Definitely Boxer! The body type may be a bit of Pit Bull or like breed, very muscular. My mom had a purebred Boxer once that looked identical to yours so hard to tell. If it is part Pit don't let the myths worry you about temperament! Looks like a very mellow dog! Thank you for supporting the Shelters! Best Wishes.

I agree with Mary. Boxer Pit mix. You've got a beauty! I've got a boxer and she's a sweerheart.

I raised AKC Boxers in the US for over 40 years and did breed rescue as well.

I really don't think there is any pit bull (proper name is American Staffordshire Terrier, or Staffie/Staffy for short) in your dog at all - my cousin raised ASTs, and our combined breed rescue experience never showed us a cross that looks like your dog.

What I think you have is a near pure Boxer - one parent being all Boxer and the other being something like a 1/2 (or more) Boxer crossed with Mastiff or one of the other giant bull type dogs.

I say a possible cross with a parent of Boxer+one of the giant bull breeds because of the size of those forelegs - blimey that's massive in the photo you've posted! Huge, huge bones, and while Boxers are fairly large, I've NEVER seen one with bones that big that didn't involve a Mastiff or similar cross. The crossed parent had to have had a lot of Boxer in him/her to throw a puppy so true to the Boxer look with only those huge bones giving away a cross presence.

Otherwise I would say your absolutely gorgeous dog is a purebred Boxer without papers - that is just a gorgeous, gorgeous Boxer and only the massive bones give the dog away as a cross.

Please check with your vet because Boxer-Mastiff/giant breed cross dogs do have some health and behaviour characteristics issues that families need to be aware of; also do an online image search using the term - boxer-mastiff giant breed cross puppies - to see what I'm suggesting as the mix in your dog.

But please believe me there is no AST in your dog. The cross throws a completely different look. Honest - but do check with your vet to confirm that as well because many locales now legislate against Boxer-Staffie cross dogs as well as purebred Staffies. You need to know your local laws.
