What Breed Is My Dog?

What Breed Is My Dog?What breed is my new pup? The breeder said Boxer Lab mix, but I'm not sure if it's because he is so small, but he looks like a Chihuahua. Help please!

Your puppy does show definite Boxer characteristics (see below) but you say he's so small you think he may be part Chi and Boxers (and/or Boxer mixes) generally don't come THAT small!

Still, whilst raising AKC Boxers and doing breed rescue 40+years in the US (I now live in the UK) I think I saw just about everything, lol, and while unusual, it is possible for a very small Boxer mix puppy to happen. It happens when Mum, Dad, and many others back up the family tree threw as 'litter runts' thereby creating a bloodline of smaller than average Boxers and/or whatever other breed is in the mix.

I do see Boxer in your puppy - the ears trying to stand up are characteristic of pre-docked Boxer ears (but also German Shepherd and a few other breeds), the head and muzzle shape indicate a Boxer-Lab mix as does the coat colour, and WOW have a closer look at those typical Boxer-Lab forepaws (thick and wide).

In the photos you've posted your puppy looks very young as in under 12wks - expect a serious and surprising 'growth spurt' once he passes 12wks. He'll look a little 'gangly' but once he's around 12-16 months will look more settled weight/size/appearance-wise. Don't be fooled by appearance, Boxers both full and cross-bred don't fully mature until around aged three years - he'll want to play, chew, mock-fight (tug-of-war with a stout rope satisfies that urge nicely) like a puppy throughout those early years.

A healthy full-bred Boxer male (neutered or not but I strongly urge you to have him altered soon after he reaches 6 months of age - speak to your vet as to the several breed specific reasons) will generally weigh between 50-80lbs, a Boxer-Lab cross like yours around the same. However, in a 'litter runts' bloodline like the one I suspect yours is from, expect max weight to be under 50lbs, probably around 40-45lbs.

Looks like a shepherd/pit mix. You bought this dog from a breeder? Do you not trust the breeder? Think they are lying? I don't quite understand. Why would a breeder be selling a random mix anyway?
