What Is This Plant?

What Is This Plant? This plant or tree sat dormant in my uncle's basement for 3 yrs. When he died my dad put it in a room where it did not get much light. It again sat dormant, no leaves at all, just sticks out of a pot. My dad just recently died and my mother threw it outside with the intention of throwing it out. There had been no leaves for 8 yrs. Summer in NH, for two weeks straight it sat outside with maybe a little rain water. Then we saw leaves starting to bud. We then repotted it with some new soil and left it outside with some watering. The plant flourished! I have left it outside for three months now and just water when the leaves get a little droopy. The leaves themselves are not shiny, they are a little "furry". The stems or branches are woody, with new growth green, then turning tree branch like. Some bug or something has recently started to eat it; there are little holes in the leaves. I want to bring it inside now, as it is getting eaten. Any help you can offer would be great. Thank you.

Hello ! If the flowers were trumpet shaped looking up, it is a Datura and it is a plant.
If the flowers are trumpet shaped and looking down or at the most horizontal, it is a Brugsmania and it is a tree.

Datura or Brugsmania should not be put indoors, the two are extremely toxic, all parts, including the seeds are poisonous. If you have cold winters in your place you will have to put them indoors but out of reach of children and pets, avoid touching the plant and if you have to, put gloves on, it is one of the most dangerous plants.

It needs light, warmth and fertilizer all year round. If it grows well you will have to prune it, the best time to do it is just before winter.

This is a very popular plant and has many lovers even though it is very toxic.
I love my one yellow Brugsmania but plan to purchase more in the future.

I have mine planted outside but I live in Florida and most of our winters are pretty mild but I do bank it fairly high on the stalk and cover it if a freeze is forecast.

I trim it back if a cover is necessary and mine is now about 9 years old. It is a show stopper when in bloom just beautiful!
Here is an interesting fact about these plants:
Brugmansia is a plant with an unusual habit. It must create a Y shape in the trunk (a fork) before it will bloom. All of your flowers will come above this Y shape in the trunk. The plant will further branch out from there, and at each node, it will create a peduncle containing a covered flower bloom.

At first, the bloom-pod (actually a calyx) will point upwards. As the flower begins to grow inside and fill out the calyx it will begin to turn downwards. That is, on most Brugmansia. A few may/will stand out facing level (horizontally).

Here are some links if you have not already found your own.
Maybe this information will help you keep it growing and also blooming.
