What Kind of Snake Is This?

grayish snakeWe found this snake near our pond. It was about 3' long with a small head and thicker middle. We're used to seeing racerback, ribbon, garter, and hognosed snakes, but we haven't seen this kind before. We live in southeastern New Jersey.

Its hard to tell as they get almost black in color as they age but I suspect it is a northern water snake.
