Mom's Black Walnut Cake


  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • Ad
  • 1 cup chopped black walnuts


Separate eggs. Beat together the butter, sugar, and egg yolks. Stir together the cornstarch, milk, and vanilla, then add to first mixture. Add flour and baking powder, which have been sifted together. Beat 2 egg whites and fold into batter. Add chopped walnut meats, which have been dredged in flour. Bake in moderate (350 degrees F) oven in greased and floured tube pan for 40-50 minutes or until cake tests done.

  • 1 Tbsp. butter or shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup black walnut meats
  • 1 cup sweet milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • Pinch of salt


Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs, add milk alternately with flour in which baking powder has been added. Add pinch of salt, vanilla, and beat well. Bake in greased loaf pan. 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes.
