Where to Find Ballard's Corn Meal?

Just wondering if anyone in this wonderful group has ever heard of Ballards CornMeal? I can remember my mom using this brand of cornmeal when I was young. My dad is now 71 and wants me to make him some of this cornbread. I can't find it where I live. If you have seen this at your local grocery store, will you please let me know? I may be able to call the store direct and order him some. I will thank you in advance for your trouble. My dad is ill, this is why I would love to be able to do this for him before he passes on.

From what I have learned googling:

It went through a few different ownerships but the cornbread mix is currently made by Martha White (the WHITE, not yellow cornbread mix). The little white banner on the left side, middle says: Ballard on it.

Check here for where to find in your area:
www.marthawhite.com/where_to_buy.aspx

(It looks like it is available at
Harris Teeter, Lowe's and Food Lion
in your area but be sure to check with your zip code.)

If you can't find it in your area you can order through their online store at the same link as above.

They even feature a Ballard recipe on the white cornbread box:

That is so sweet of you to do that for your Dad. If they sold it my area I would mail you a box. Good luck to you.

I grew up with a different kind of dressing, hamburger, oyster dressing but my husbands mom made the cornbread dressing. I started using ballards corbread mix and it makes a hugs difference on how the dressing taste. So since I can't find the original ballards I'll try this. Thank you so much.

Here is the link from the internet archive. It looks like that page went down in 2009.

Here is the link to the current website's selection on corn meal:

The Ballard corn meal had the recipe for thanksgiving dressing on the side of the box! I would love to have it and the corn mill itself! Thanks in advance

It may SAY "Ballard", but it isn't. Thank Martha White for that.

The Martha White recipe just isn't the same. Ballard's was the only corn meal we used, they've changed the recipe. :(

This is the closest I could find. It is the recipe on a box of Martha White Cornbread mix, the company that purchased Old Ballard years ago.

There's nothing left to make good dressing with what were you thinking please bring this cornbread mix back

November 22, 20173 found this helpful

Cornbread dressing is just not the same without Ballard. Its what I grew up and now 63. I WANT MY BALLARD BACK, PLEASE. You have totally ruined our holidays!!

December 24, 20170 found this helpful

Yes bring Ballard back, dressing isn't the same. Martha should be ashamed to disappoint so many people dressing.

Ballard was a tradition especially in The South and especially during the holidays. A good marketing idea for Martha White would be to bring it back for a Holiday Limited Edition and maybe focus the marketing and distribution in the previous strong Ballard sales areas.

Think of all the good public relations Martha White could get out of doing this.

Did it ever cross your mind that the reason the demand dropped was due to the change in the packaging. My wife and I discovered by accident a box of cornbread mix with a small white banner proclaiming it to be Ballard cornbread mix. Ballard had apparently been bought out. We were able to find this for a couple of years and then it was gone. I believe if y'all had made the packaging so it was a little more identifiable, you would still have a large following, especially in the South. It seems like more and more Southern traditions are being taken away and I attribute this to large companies buying in bulk to stock their stores. All stores are stocked alike with no regard to local taste. This is probably true to other areas as well. I would think with all the comments on this web site you would be addressing a come back of the original yellow Ballard Cornbread Mix. My comment was very tame, you should hear me standing in the aisle at the store when I find another Southern tradition has been discontinued. Bring back the Ballard.

I so agree. Ive been looking for Ballard for years. My mother wouldnt use anything else. No other cornbread is the same. Im so glad there are others like me out there who were raised on Ballard and who love it! Martha White needs to bring it back and make it clear its Ballard!!

I:very been looking for white Ballard cornbread mix for years when Public discontinued it. I'm searching...it's the only cornmeal I like. So...I've done without. Where can I stock up?

November 28, 20153 found this helpful

We also used Ballard for years and were disappointed when we couldn't get it. What you are looking for is the old fashioned stone ground cornmeal. This is what we use now - House Autry Yellow Plain Cornmeal sold by Food Lion or Harris Teeter. It comes in a 2lb bag and the pkg is gold with red lettering. We make it in an iron skillet and it is as good as Ballard. Heat the skillet in the oven first then pour in the batter and bake. Just like my southern Missouri mom used to make!

Thanks for the tip on the cornbread mix to bad ballad is not made any more.

September 21, 20220 found this helpful

Thanks - I will try the House of Autry, but I'm not trying ANYTHING with Martha White's name on it. They apparently bought the brand just to get the competition off the market! I used to buy "blueberry" muffins and such, but I'm so angry with Martha White, I am avoiding ALL their products!

Yes, and Martha White used to have Ballard cornbread mix but they stopped making it which stinks. But you can mix Martha white mix with Morrison's Corn Kits brand make in Texas and have a cornbread similar to the old fashion Ballards. I think it is a shame that Martha White bought out Ballard and stopped packaging it. I would love for someone to come up the exact receipt. I hope your dad got to eat his cornbread. My Dad wanted gingerbread like his grandmother used to make I can not remember how many receipts i tried till I got it right. Would love some good old fashion Ballard Corn bread.

November 4, 20170 found this helpful

Which Martha White mix do you mix with Morrison's Corn Kits to get close to the Ballard recipe? I'm desperate. My husband doesn't like anything I have tried since Martha White discontinued making the Ballard recipe (which was not exactly the same as Ballard.)

September 21, 20220 found this helpful

I'm not "mixing" anything that includes any Martha White product. I'm sick of these giant companies wiping out the smaller, better companies that had better products. Why don't you try the recommended House of Autry cornbread instead of the detestable Martha White product that you have to "mix" with something else to make it palatable?

I am 66 years and own a four generation Bakery and bake for a living and our business has been around for approximately 67 years. I have been searching the grocery stores for the past couple of years trying to find the Ballard cornbread mix that my mother and grandmother use to make. It was the best and I grew up enjoying the quality that was apparent to them and the rest of our family. It was very disapointing to find out it is no longer available. Hope it comes back some day!

I was somewhat surprised to see how many people felt as I do about Ballard's corn bread mix. The fact that Martha White bought them out makes me want to find some other company's mix, which like M.W.'s will not be quite as good. I will avoid Martha White whenever I can to show my displeasure at their action.

I kept the Ballard Corn bread recipe from the side of the box. I also hated when I couldn't find that Ballard box at Thanksgiving time. My Mothe4r used it also. I have found that if you use the mix from a nearby mill it is tastier. Call me and I will give yothe recipe on the phone. I am going to a funeral this afternoon, but will be here after one tomorrow. I loved seeing your comment for I too, have been trying to find Ballard Cornbread Mix. I am a native of Haywood County, NC (near Asheville, NC) and my mother making a cake of Ballard Cornbread Mix every other day for my dad to eat with his pinto beans, slaw, tomatoes, onion, etc. He would not have any thing but Ballard. My parents are deceased and I am in my 70's, still cannot find this mix.

Im so angry at Martha White to buy Ballard and then kill their superior product. There is nothing to compare to Ballards cornbread mix. Please bring it back in the best interest of society!
