I would recommend a street length party dress, along with a nice pair of heels. Nothing that looks extremely formal, just a nice informal party look.

I would go to a thrift or consignment store and buy that "little black dress" that will come in so handy many more times.

I'd say something colorful or sparkly would be appropriate... lame fabric, perhaps. I went to a ROTC ball once in a silver lame pantsuit. However, I was able to get a very pretty hunter-green velveteen cocktail dress at a thrift store many years later. I wore that for several semi-informal party situations. If you prefer slacks over dresses or skirts, choose something that looks just a little fancy. Don't forget to accessorize! A scarf or any jewelry that you'd wear "for special occasions only" should be right. And have fun...
