After a load of clothes are washed, there is a ring left on the washer. How can we prevent that? There is a smell occasionally, as well.

Could the residue ring be caused from grease or oil? Add degreaser to the wash cycle with your detergent and see if that helps any. Are you using a cold water wash/rinse cycle versus hot water wash? If so, you might consider changing the wash cycle temperature. If this doesn't help any, change laundry product to something else.

I had the odor problem too when I was using liquid detergent. I switched to powdered detergent and have not had any problems since.
