Oatmeal Bread


  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 package dry yeast (1 Tbsp.)
  • Ad
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 cups white flour


In large bowl, combine oats, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, salt and margarine with boiling water. Let cool. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water. When first mixture has cooled to lukewarm, add dissolved yeast. Add white flour to make dough stiff enough to handle. Turn out onto floured surface and knead 10 minutes. Place in greased bowl. Cover and let rise until double. Punch down and let rise again. Shape into 2 loaves and place in greased 9x5 inch pans. Let rise. Bake at 375 degrees F for 30-40 minutes. Cool on racks, brushing loaves with margarine for softer crust.
