My new puppy won't eat. What could be wrong?
By matt rivers from Green Cove Springs, FL
There are many reasons why he/she isn't eating. Take him/her to the vet ASAP.
I have a 11 week old Pomeranian mixed with Maltese, who's giving me trouble with eating. Please advise.
I suggest you immediately take your puppy to your vet as there could be hundreds of reasons why your Pom won't eat. Delay will not improve the problem and will probably be more costly in the long run.
I did take him to the vet, they said he's fine. Suggested I switch to meat, which I really don't want to cause it will damage his teeth faster.
Lightly sprinkle the food you give it with a tablespoon of finely chopped cooked chicken breast. Also serve the food warmed up slightly in the microwave. { Not too hot }.A tablespoon of chopped , peeled apple may be nice for the wee dog too. My wee one also enjoys some finely chopped watermelon. NO pips or skin.
Oh wow thank you so much, I get so worried when he doesn't eat
I hope you're not one who wants to only give him dry dog food it's called kibble. I guarentee if you do your dog will have rotten teeth.
I do wet it a little, I also mix in a little if the meat. I give him science diet
How's the wee dog? Is she eating yet? Try mashing the tinned dog food then pouring a little juice from tinned tuna or salmon over the food. This also works for me. Keep trying different brands of tinned dog food until you find the one it likes. Don't over do the chicken either .[ no skin ]. As she may get soft stools.
oh he's much better now, i'm happy to have found this site. it helps so much. i'll also try the tuna or salmon. as you say i'll mix it up sometimes. thanks guys
Crush the food and put it in milk
My puppy wont eat he is drinking water but seens week and not playful
I Have a 2 month old Pomeranian poo that's not eating for me . I Foster and I'm very worried about her help me please
I brought my dog, a six week old Australian Kelpie Bull Arab mix, two days ago. I am confused why he is not eating his dry dog food. He is trying to though.
All that I feed him is Pedigree Puppy and milk 3 times a day since he can't eat. What should I do about this and what should I feed him?Three days ago my dog started acting sick. She will drink water, but won't eat. I tried deworming her yesterday.
Now she throws up just a little bit of the water, maybe the size of a quarter, some of the times when she drinks.I have a 6 week old puppy. I've had her for 2 weeks because her mom died. I started off giving her milk, but she started doing great with eating regular puppy food. She is a Chihuahua and my mom accidentally stepped on her. Her equilibrium is off, but I have been giving her water throughout the day.
She can't walk she only gets up to go pee. She won't take any dog food though. I have no way of getting her to the vet. What can I do for her? Will she be okay if she doesn't eat for a couple days, but I keep her hydrated? Help!Your little puppy does need a vet's attention urgently. It is very serious when they go off their food and the accident may have caused internal injury.
I have a 10 week old female Pit Bull that my adult pit birthed. She used to be the biggest of 11 pups throughout the nursing and weaning process. After introducing soft puppy food at 7 1/2 weeks she did great and was still host of the pack. For the last week or 10 days she absolutely will not eat her food, table food, or anything at all.
She drinks plenty of water, but when she pees it's a thicker consistency than normal. Anyone ever experience this? What's her deal cuz my vet won't be back in the office till the 13th. Any suggestions or home remedies?I have a 12 week old German Shepherd puppy that has stopped eating, but drinks a lot of water. He did eat yesterday, but I came in to find that he had thrown-up his food. He is now eating very little compared to what he usually eats.
I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what may be the problem.Something is very wrong with your puppy! Take him to your vet now as he may have an intestinal blockage or other internal problem. Any delay will result in a more serious condition and costly medical services.
This could be parvo. You will need to see a Vet to find out. Parvo can be deadly so see your vet asap.
I have a three months old GSD puppy. She stopped eating as of 3 days ago and she has lost a lot of weight and also reduced in size. Please what do I do to help her condition?
Please take your pup to your vet immediately!!! Not eating for three days and losing weight are signs of a serious problem!!!
The dog may have an intestinal blockage from eating something it shouldn't have. If this is the case it would die without veterinary care.
I have a puppy that will be 6 weeks old on March 2nd. The mother started weening her at 4 weeks. The person I got her from said she has been eating puppy food and drinking, but I haven't been able to get her to drink any water or eat very much.
What should I do?The puppy is so young to leave its mother! She also may have been ill when you received her. Please take her to your vet immediately as she needs food and water now, and most probably medication.
I assure you the person is not telling you the whole truth.
Puppies are not yet ready to leave the mom at six weeks. They should be with the mom and siblings for eight weeks.
Purchase some puppy replacement formula or goat milk. Give this to the puppy until it's eating again. Then you'll need to feed it high quality wet kibble, not cheap stuff like Purina.
I got a Labrador on February 14. He was 7 weeks old; right now of February 21 he is 8 weeks. 3 days ago he would make noise like he had something in his throat and wouldn't eat. We took him to the vet. The vet gave him 2 shots & the noise he was making went away.
The problem is he still doesn't eat. The vet also told me to give him Pedialyte because he wasn't drinking water either. And it's been 3 days already, he only drinks Pedialyte but not much. Any suggestions I will certainly try on him. Thanks.Try plain boiled chicken breasts and white rice. A bland diet basically, also stop doing pedialyte as much and offer red Gatorade. Gatorade has more sugar and electrolytes in it. If dogs dont eat or drink they get low sugar levels and that makes them sicker. Chicken broth would also work, just go to the store and get those Wylers cubes and follow the directions, make sure its cooled though.
Best of luck =)
I would skip the Wylers cubes. They have a ton of salt. And straight up sugar is not good for dogs, especially sick ones. If your puppy doesn't start to eat you need to see a Vet right away. Like now. You can try beef or chicken baby food. that works for my cats. Chicken broth or stock in a can has less salt and he might like it. There is something else going on if the 1st Vet trip didn't fix things. He is really young so dont wait to take him back to the Vet. He is young enough that he doesn't have much immunity yet.
I have an Indian Spitz puppy who has just turned 3 months old. Yesterday, she was very playful and had enough food and was clearly healthy. We used to feed her with Drools (S) and yesterday we started giving her Drools (M). This morning she refused to eat or drink anything. She vomited 3 times and on contacting the vet, he has said it must be because of the sudden change in her food or because she hasn't been dewormed. In the morning, we gave milk in a dropper and that seems to work. But she's always sleeping and biting if we try to feed her. Can someone help?
Thanks
If your puppy has not been vaccinated for Parvo virus, you need to consider that. Parvo causes puppies to vomit and have severe diarrhea. They are very sick. The fatality rate is pretty high. But some dogs make it and there is good supportive vet care that does help (antibiotics and hydration). Have you puppy checked out right away by a Vet that knows what they are doing. Good luck.
I got a puppy almost a week ago. She went to the vet the next day and had her first shots and the vet wormed her too. She didn't seem to want to eat too much when we got her, but was weighed at 3.70kg. She will be 8 weeks old on Sunday and she doesn't seem to want to eat and has had soft stools for 2 days.
She is still drinking and is very playful and she will eat occasionally, but seems to be losing weight. I can see her hip bones when she is standing. Please help. I am very worried and not sure if she could be fretting for her mum and siblings.Something is very wrong if your very young puppy is not eating and is losing weight. Please take her to your vet immediately! Any delay can worsen her condition and increase medical costs.
Although, my father has an income, it has been maxed out due to medical bills, medication, two funerals, and furnace replacement. This is on top of a mortgage that has gone backwards. He doesn't qualify for home improvement loans, and the house is unlivable without them. He is presently in a nursing home and facing bankruptcy if an answer isn't found soon. We have offered to move in with him and make arrangements for the repairs and pay the loan payments ourselves, but we do not qualify for such a large loan either. Is there any hope?

My dad's friend gave me a six week old puppy and he will not eat at all. He drinks water, but won't eat. I even tried milk. I don't know what to do.
Something is very wrong if such a young puppy won't eat!!! Please take him to your vet immediately!!!!
Puppies should stay with their mothers for at least 8 weeks to ensure a good nutritional and emotional base before adoption. Did your friend's Dad give you the puppy because he already had problems and your friend's Dad did not want to take him to a vet?
Please take him to your veterinarian now for immediate help or your puppy will die!!!
We have just recently been given a, 6-8 week old puppy, that the vet has given medicines for hookworms and roundworms. That seems to be taking care of getting rid of them, but she is still not wanting to eat.
She drinks lots of water and will eat when we force feed her as the vet showed us, but not on her own. Any suggestions? The medicine for worms is really tough. It makes pets feel sick and not want to eat.
You may have to keep up the syringe feedings until the meds are out of her system.
Are you using wet kibble or replacement formula? Try puppy formula if she gets too thin or you're concerned.
My dog is a full bred Shih Tzu and is about 6 months old. He recently entered puberty, I believe, and has not been eating and is calmer than usual. Is this normal, could something be wrong with him? He still plays and runs, but just hasn't been eating much and gets lazy at some points in the day.
