Our 4 year old Staffy started peeing on the owner's bed. She only does it now and then. She goes out to the toilet during the nite.

Make sure a vet checks her out to make sure there are no physical causes for this. If not, maybe your dog is missing you, and that's why he is doing this on the bed, which has your scent.

Have there been any changes to your schedule? A new baby? New pets in the house? A move?

My 7 year old neutered Papillion mix has started peeing on my bed. He never did this before. Why has he started doing this? He has no bladder problems.

Hi Beverly, Whenever a dog's behavior suddenly changes like your describing, there's two places to start looking before anything else.

1) Medical: you say he doesn't have any bladder problems, are you absolutely sure? Have you had his urine checked by a vet? With a urination behavior, medical problems always have to officially ruled out first.
2) If that isn't the issue, then I would look at what has changed since this behavior started? Work schedule, house guests, someone moving in or out, stress or other problems within the home.
Think hard about the possibilities of what it could be. Dogs just don't suddenly begin peeing inside the home for no good reason! I'm interested to hear your comments.
All the best, Cabinfever.

My 8 year old Chihuahua mix (who is potty pad trained) suddenly started peeing on my bed a few months ago. Sometimes it's pillows sometimes it's my brand new blanket. We thought maybe she was acting out or was just getting old and couldn't go, but she still plays like a puppy and still uses the potty pad three times a day as usual.

My husband and I normally have opposite schedules so she is never home alone more than 5 hours tops. Idk what to do!

If this is recent behavior I would take her to the vet for a checkup. She may have an infection.

Make sure to clean out the urine completely from everywhere she goes. If she doesn't stop, she might have an infection.

I want to know why the dog pees on the bed even though he has been outside enough times to relieve himself. He was given to me from someone who had him in a dog crate most of the time. He knows he is supposed to go outside and seems housetrained already.

Two possibilities: Could be a medical reason such as a bladder infection. If you have eliminated that possibility, it is most likely territorial marking, just like dogs do when they lift their leg outside. Even females will mark with urine. You either have to figure out why the dogs feels the need to mark your bed ( is for example, a new person sleeping in the bed?) If you cannot change the factor that is causing the dog to mark your bed with urine, the only option is to restrict access to the bed.

Keep the door to the bedroom closed unless you or someone else is in the room. The dog will probably not pee on the bed unless he is alone. If, on the other hand, you see him doing it, correcting him at that time might help.

I am having a problem with my 8 year old mini Yorkie urinating for the first time on my and my boyfriend's bed. We first thought it was our sausage dog. Then tonight he came through with me to the kitchen to get something and walked straight passed his potty pad onto his bed and urinated and walked back through to the kitchen.

The other dog and his bed wasn't there, but I wasn't even putting him in there. He has never done this before, but they both had been in trouble for urinating on the bed. We have been building for a long time so I don't know if it's because of that stress?

Please help.

Stress can cause this. Try keeping the bedroom door closed for a while. Construction is very stressful to pets.

My 9 month old female Dachshund with 1/4th Beagle keeps peeing on our couches! We take her outside often and she goes potty outside, but she's still peeing on the couches. She used to pee on the floor too, but we managed to break her of that somehow. She's even gone in our room and peed on our bed a few times. And even though she's got pee pads that she uses in her room (we gate her in the laundry room when we leave and at night) she still pees on her bed.

We're at our wits end with it. Now she's taken up chewing on the walls and the closet door in the laundry room even though she's got plenty of toys and chew bones.

I would take her to the vet to make sure there are no physical issues. If not, I would invest in obedience classes.

Try your best to catch her mid-stream and make a loud sound and quickly move her to where it is okay to urinate.

I believe she's bored. Try to play with her more often and take her outside to play too

My dog hasn't been spayed yet and is one year old. She's been house broken for 8 months now, with no problems. She just peed in my bed for the last 2 nights.

She goes outside a lot, and has never had this problem in the past. I'm thinking it would help if we spayed her.

Your first step is to take her to the vet to rule out a urinary tract infection or some other physical reason for her incontinence.

While spaying is critical (to me at least since dachshunds--which I have--that don't get spayed have a high risk for cancers) bladder changes are frequently a medical issue--bladder infection, urinary tract infection, kidney infection. My first stop would be the vet. If this is the case, the antibiotics usually work quickly.

If the pup gets a clean bill of health, talk to the vet as the least frequent cause is anxiety or stress and there are a lot of good things that can be done to reduce that.

The other thing is if it happens at night, pick up the water bowl around dinner time and replace it first thing in the morning.

Hope it is an easy solution for you! Prayers for the pup!

She will need to be evaluated for incontinence, but when she is healthy I recommend a spay.

I have a 3 year old Shih Tzu and she never pees in house. I went out for few hours and when I came home there was pee on the floor. This is not normal. So we go to bed and she sleeps with me every night.

I woke up 2 hours later and she had peed all over my bed, lots. I woke up again a few hours later to pee all over again. She sleeps all night till I get up. She has never done this.

Sounds like a urinary tract infection to me. See your vet.

Prayers for the pup!!

Any sudden changes in bowel or bladder habits are a prompt to call the vet ASAP! We have been down this route many times and 99 times out of 100 it is a UTI and the antibiotic clears it right up.

If the pup gets a clean bill of health, then talk to the vet about how to determine if it is a behavior issue and any opportunities to retrain (like do a quick round of crate training). The 1 of 100 time this wasn't a UTI, a quick round of crate training brought the behavior issue under control!

Sending up good wishes for you all!

This sounds like a UTI. Get your dog to the Vet right away. If you let them go on it can spread to the kidneys.

All right. Long story short. My boyfriend and I took this dog in from a friend who couldn't take care of him. My boyfriend was his favorite person and he just recently left for the Navy. It's obviously distressing Berkeley as he has been consistently having accidents in the house. I will leave for ten minutes and he'll relieve himself by the door.

I believe it has something to do with separation anxiety but today, I came home to find that he'd urinated in my bed. He's not allowed in it and I know it's not purposeful, but it's really out of character and I'm honestly pretty upset. I'm doing everything I can think of to make him happy and nothing is working.

The dog is marking his territory. Clean everything with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle. Make sure he is on a strict food/walking schedule.

You may have to crate him. He will quickly learn that if he wants free run of the house, he will have to do his business outside.

Have the pup checked ASAP for a UTI or kidney infection. If he gets a clean bill of health, then talk to the vet about meds or pheromones for separation anxiety. In my experience any changes in potty habits are most frequently health related. Prayers for your pup! Post back what the vet says!

My female Pom, a 5 year old ex-puppy farm girl, just peed in my bed in the night. She has no health problems and is the only pet. I've had her 2 years and she has settled in very well, but when I got out of bed to get some water, she went to where I had been sleeping and peed.

Why? She had been out prior to going to bed, what can I do so it won't happen again?

Every dog is different...some pee to mark, some pee when they are angry or upset about a change, and sometimes it is a health issue...like a urinary tract infection.

Safest to rule out the UTI first since left untreated, those are NASTY. Check with your vet for the protocols...ours lets us bring in a pee sample and the pup gets to stay home!

Our vet recommends taking a small plastic container (the low sided kind for our small dog, the higher sided ones for bigger fur kids). Be sure to wash the container is VERY CLEAN and DRY before using...no food or soap residue. Then you just slide it under the tush while they are going and collect the sample.

If there is no infection...here are two things to try..

1. Just try taking up the water bowl 2 hours before bed time, take her out immediately before bed time and see if that resolves the issue. If so, that becomes the new normal!

If not, suggestion 2 (and we have had to go this route) think about any recent changes in your household...it can be as small as using a new fabric softener on the sheets or a as big as a kid leaving for college.

If it is something simple like you changed fabric softener, go back original product and if that resolves it, all is good! When we had our beloved Carmel, she was always affected by little changes and when they went back to the way they were...she was good.

Our current boy, Clarence, is more affected by BIG changes and that is a little harder to manage, but when you love them, nothing is impossible!

If it is a big change like a kid leaving the house and the pup misses him/her, talk to your vet about rewards based system/activities to help the pup overcome the change and get used to the new normal.

Good luck!! Hope your pup stays well and happy!!

Six years ago my husband and I adopted a male and female Dachshund. There were trying times, but for the most part they were good dogs. About 5 months ago the female escaped out of the house and was killed. The male mourned for a couple of months, but then seemed to bounce back.

Lately though he has started jumping onto our bed and peeing in the middle of it when we are not around. We have tried everything to curb this, but he continues to do it. Any suggestions? We are at our wits end and considering giving him to a shelter.

Your dog has be traumatized, and may be incontinent. I would crate him at bedtime or diaper him before surrendering him.

Your dog needs to be evaluated by a Vet to rule out physical problems like a bladder infection. If this is not a physical problem you need to consider behavioral problems. Your Vet should be able to help there too. I always like to start with confidence building. Start something new with this dog. If you are not currently walking the dog that is a good place to start. An agility course (that doesnt stress his back) is good too. Really anything where he is getting more attention and exercise. If this doesnt help consider closing the bedroom door when you are gone or limiting him to a couple rooms.

Have a 11 month old Maltese/Shih tzu who is not desexed and a 4 year old female Maltese/Shih tzu. One of them is weeing on the bed when we go out for long amounts of time. Usually someone is home most of the time and this doesn't happen. It is in the spot where the 4 year old sleeps. Also, both dogs are weeing all over the place outside. When we had only the one dog it was only on the grass. Help.

Thanks.

Your dog is marking his territory and expressing displeasure at being left alone. You are the master. He needs to be on a strict meal and walking schedule. He gets crated until he knows not to relieve himself on the bed

Dog and cat laying on bedWe have a 3 year old American Staffordshire Bull Terrior that has been urinating on all the beds in our apartment, on and off since he was a puppy. He goes through phases. He goes from being good with no peeing, then all of a sudden start peeing on our beds right in front of us.

Nothing has changed. We give him tons of love and attention, and we bring him out all day and night to do his business. I've had it! My boyfriend and I fight over it. I say keep him off the bed, but he feels it's a losing battle. Please someone help!
