Bassett Dresser?

A white Bassett dresser.I bought this dresser from a yard sale site here in New Orleans. I found the Bassett tag inside a drawer. The man said he bought it for his daughter when she was young and she is over 50 years old now. About what age is it and what is it worth? Thank you!

Is there a model number under the drawers or on the back. Sometimes I can find the original advertisements but I usually need the model name or number.

This style waxed and waned in popularity from around 1955 through 1985, so it is important to have more details to pinpoint the exact year.

It also appears yours was not originally white as I don't remember (but I could be wrong) a piece that had a brown top and white body. I am guessing it was all dark wood to start. Is that a correct assessment or is the picture misleading?

The one on Etsy could be a high starting point--but that appears not to be a completed sale and also it is appears to be redone, not original colors as even if it was originally all "antique white" this color now is not that color, so you are not comparing apples to apples.

This provincial style is popular along the east cost of the US and that is where it fetches the most money. In most other places it does not sell for nearly as much as you will see in beachy towns.

Where are you located? In these coastal sales people advertise it as cottage chic or shabby chic.

Yours has come condition issues which will impact the final selling value. You can always start high and take best offer, no matter where you are located!

Post back how your sale goes. I love to trend values around the country as they change daily! Thanks for sharing!

A living North Carolina, 25 miles from high point, the furniture market of the world, and 30 miles from Martinsville, Virginia. We're basset is made or should say. What's my if you call the city of Martinsville? There are lot of retired people that worked in the basic furniture plant that continue all about the furniture, and the city should be able to give you some names are website where you can contact these people.

Your Bassett dresser has short cabriole legs along with smooth and elaborate curves, which is a distinctive feature of the French provincial furniture style. French provincial furniture was originated in the 17th and 18th century in the provincial towns of France such as Lyon, Liege, Blois, Orleans and in the countryside of Bordeaux and Normandy. This furniture features a mix of styles from both Parisian and Royal style of furniture. Inlay works and wood carvings do not figure much in this style like, unlike French royal furniture style. White was the common color used on the pieces of the French provincial style furniture along with different shades of gray and light tones such as sky blue, light green, light pink, silver, beige and many others.

Bassett made dressers of this style not only in light colors, but also unpainted - the colors of natural wood. It seems to me that your dresser was updated (painted) like here www.forloveofthepaint.com/.../before-and-after-vintage-bassett...
So you have vintage Mid-Century era French Provincial style dresser made by Bassett Furniture.
At the back, if there is no paint because updating, you will find a serial number, type of wood and the name of the line like here www.chairish.com/.../versailles-vintage-french-provincial.... The first digits are going to be your collection and the following digits after the dash will denote the item type.
The price is about $600-700 furnishgreen.com/.../

The bad news is, the back is missing. I think Im going to have it professionally stripped down. It has a few layers of paint on it.

I think Im going to keep it, because I adore it. I was just curious about it. Thank you for the information!!

I had a set line that. My parents got it in the early 1960s. It is French Provincial.

This is a lovely style but not so popular anymore so it's nice to see that you love it and may decide to refurbish.
Not sure about the top being black as I'm sure that was probably painted that color to maybe hide/cover some of the flaws.
The majority of French Provincial furniture was usually white/off white but I'm seeing some nice refurbished pieces redone in different colors and trims and they're selling so this may appeal to some people.
I hope you will post pictures for us if you decide to redo yours.

I sure will!! Ive been trying to find someone to do it, but so far, I havent had any luck. Theyre either too busy or too expensive. Ill have to save up some money!! Im thinking of stripping all the old paint off it myself. I was given instructions by a professional that does it, so hopefully Ill be successful. *fingers crossed* Thank you for the information and interest!! Im excited to see it naked.

You may be real good at doing some of it yourself - a labor of love..
There are lots of articles and YouTube videos available so take advantage of everything available.
Sometimes my daughter takes an empty drawer to our local Ace hardware store and they help her identify the type of wood and also the type of paint used before as this can be crucial to refinishing. They can help with how to remove also so take advantage of all avenues.
Good luck - you can post pictures of your progress - not just the finished job.
