You can look on Craigslist for free or cheap furniture or even garage sales. I would also recommend looking at thrift stores especially Goodwill Outlet.

Go on Freecycle. My group gives out furniture constantly.

Finding free or inexpensive furniture can be done (over a period of time) but you will need help loading and unloading as well as suitable transportation to haul home your finds. This can be a problem especially if there is a disabled person in the family that might not be able to help with the lifting.

  • You can place "wanted" ads in the free section of Craigslist and Freecycle explaining what kinds of pieces you are looking for.
  • You should check your local Craigslist and Freecycle everyday as new stuff is listed and it does not last very long before someone has scooped it up.
  • You should also sign up on Nextdoor.com as this is in your neighborhood and you can list what you need on this site also. Check this often also.
  • nextdoor.com/
  • If there are small or used furniture stores in your area you can sometimes find good buys as they also want to get rid of used items quickly.
  • Sometimes smaller furniture stores put stuff out for trash pickup that is still usable but may be a trade-in for them.
  • Salvation Army and other thrift stores may have inexpensive items that they will reduce for a quick sale.

Thrift stores, craigslist, facebook swap shops are great places to find it. Also, if you are near a college town, go dumpster diving.

A lot of students who are moving just leave stuff by the dumpsters.
