It would help if we knew if you were in a large city or small town. I would get on the phone and call churches and ask whoever you talk to if there is a bulletin board for their parish.I'll be some family has an extra bed and even someone would have a truck to help deliver it.Call any food bank organization because they usually have links to other sorts of help. If there is a craigslist for your area, look under free listing. There are always people giving away beds. Facebook too is a good place to put out the word. Hope this helps.

Don't know where you live, but here in Illinois we have a site called "Freecycle". Give it a try.

If you live in a larger city where there is a Salvation Army, you can get a voucher once a year for a piece of furniture - I'm assuming a bed would be furniture, right. Doesn't hurt to try!

Go to the office of your local Salvation Army and tell them you need a bed and they will give you a voucher to take to their Thrift Store for a free bed. That being said, if they have any beds. Also most thrift stores won't let people pick from the best choices for free items. They usually have a separate section of free stuff. Another thing most of the thrift stores require that you pick up the items yourself.

Another option would be an air mattress, you can get some that are quite good for not too much, and some of them are almost as tall as a bed. Also talk to your pastor he just might know somebody that has a spare bed that they would donate and sometimes they might also take up a special offering for a needy member of the congregation.

Have you tried www.freecycle.org/ ? There is usually a local chapter within a few miles of wherever you live. Go to the national site and they will direct you to your local sites, then just ask for what you need.

How do I get a bed? I had to throw my bed out; it was infested with bed bugs. My apartment has been fumigated and bombed 4 weeks in a row so now the bugs are gone, but I am sleeping on the floor. With the hip replacement and my heart valve repair I am in pain almost constantly.

The Salvation Army cannot help, Catholic Charities does not give vouchers any more, and I am on a fixed income. How do I get a bed or even a good clean air bed?

You do not say if you have a way to pick up a bed/mattress so that may be your biggest problem as many "give-a-ways" do not provide delivery so be sure that you ask about this when you call or visit any of these suggested sites.

Craigslist and Freecycle all have free ads where people can post things they wish to give away and also where you can post what you need.
Other places:
1) Hotels and Apartment Complexes often have mattresses left in storage when they purchase new ones.
2) Furniture Stores often take "trade-ins" (or have to pick up old mattresses when delivering a new one) and wind up dumping them.
3) Thrift Shops (church, hospice, private, Goodwill) often have items they cannot put in their shops or might even know someone who has an "extra".
Just remember - most likely you will have to arrange your own pick up/delivery.

I'm a single mother with 3 children. I just recently moved back to Indiana and am getting ready to start my job on Monday. I'm looking for some help with beds for myself and the kids. Is there anyone that can help me out?

When I moved I rented a storage unit and had the majority of my things stored, but there were some of our belonging that I didn't get into the storage unit before we left and someone promised to put them in there for us and unfortunately they never made it there. Now we are all sleeping on the floor in our new trailer and I haven't got the funds to go out and buy beds. Any information on a place that could help me with this would be greatly appreciated!

This is a link that has information about obtaining beds in your state (all states, you have to scroll down to find your state and county):

www.shpbeds.org/chapters

You may also find help with your State's United Way program: www.iuw.org/

Be aware that at this moment--3 21-20--all resources in all states are all absorbed with the COVID crisis so you may or may not get results from any inquiry.

You may need to go as local as you can and call (DON'T TRY TO GO IN PERSON) every church and religious group in your town and see if anyone can offer guidance.

Prayers for solutions for you.

Post back with an update.

I'm in need of 2 twin beds for my children, but we can't afford new ones. We're extremely low income.

I'd like to know of any programs that would help families in need with beds and bedding in Iowa please.

You can put an ad on Freecycle or Craigslist. Churches can also help.

Also contact your local St. Vincent dePaul and Salvation Army. They can give you a voucher for a couple of free beds at their stores.

You may be able to also get food, power assistance and clothes for the kids. I hope things get better for you soon.

Your local church is the best place to start as they may know your family circumstances and be willing to help with things like this. Hopefully you have someone with transportation to pick up whatever you find as asking someone to deliver and (and set up?) is a lot more than just finding the beds. Delivering is a big job so be sure you have a plan before placing an ad (state if you can pick up or if you need beds delivered).

You will probably not be seeing any new beds offered on any of these sites so please do not get your hopes set on that. You will also need mattresses and linens so give that some thought also.

In addition to Craigslist, you can check Facebook where some people list free beds, bedding, and items you may need. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I would get in contact with your social worker to see if they could help guide you in the right direction.

Other options:

  • Research seniors and disability organizations in your area and ask if there are any programs that can help get you a free bed, or any grants. Example: You can check with Salvation Army.
  • You can also check free on Craigslist, NextDoor, Freecycle
  • Reach out to neighbors, family, family friends and see if they have a bed to let you have!

Freecycle has a lot. People who are moving often give many things away.

There are many places to look/search for a free bed but you must always consider the source as used bedding can carry hidden bedbugs that will be a nightmare to eliminate from your house/apartment.

  • The biggest problem with getting free furniture is having the right kind of transportation to pick it up (and having help to load and unload) as most places (especially Salvation Army, Goodwill, thrift stores, Freecycle, Craigslist, etc) will not have anyone to help load and unload (they usually have signs posted stating they will not help with pickup/loading).
  • If you answer any ads from these sites be sure you ask questions about pickup and delivery.
  • Beds are large and heavy and very cumbersome to load and unload and place in a home. Single beds are more manageable.
  • Churches will many times help a disabled person and they may even provide help delivering and unloading. Talk with someone in any church office near you (you do not have to be a member to ask for help).
  • Nextdoor.com may be a good place to search as these will be people in your area and they may also help with pickup and delivery.
  • nextdoor.com/
  • If there are any furniture stores in your area (and you have help with pickup and delivery) you can check with them as they will many times have used bedding they have picked up when delivering new bedding.

I am so sad to hear of your situation. Do you belong to any groups through United Way for your disability? Many groups like the MS Society, Lupus Society, etc. have support services so maybe you can try that avenue.

Churches or other religious groups may also have sources to assist you to buy a NEW mattress (offering funds to pay at reduced costs) and some even have congregants who will help deliver. If you belong to a religious group, ask.

Sending up prayers for you! Post back with an update!

I hope you will be able to live a safer and more peaceful life in your new environment.

You may be able to find a used free bed but remember free things are rarely delivered and usually there is not help available to load and unload this type of thing.
Be sure you have your own means to pick-up what you find and also have sufficient help to load and unload as this can be a big deciding fact when trying to locate free stuff.

  • There are a lot of items that can be picked up from almost anywhere you find something but I do not think that bedding is one of those items.
  • There is always the chance of bedding having bedbugs (even from nice places) so this is something you should be aware of. Bedbugs can be a nightmare to completely remove from your home.
  • I believe it may be possible to pick up clean bedding from someplace like Habitat Home Stores as most of their bedding is new. This may cost you some cash but they may also give you a discount.
  • Some furniture stores also may have some damaged bedding they will sell for less money and they may even deliver.
  • Free is very nice but sometimes we may have to sacrifice a little more when it comes this sort of item.
  • I'm not against trying free ads on Craigslist, Freecycle or Nextdoor.com but I would be very careful before taking used bedding home with me.
  • You could try visiting a nearby church and talk with someone about your situation as this is a very good place to start rebuilding your life.
  • Good luck and I wish you much success in your new life.

Do you have a Good Will Outlet nearby? If you have a truck or van you may be able to find one for an inexpensive cost.

You can also search Craigslist in the free section (or for sale), Freecycle.

Or you can post an Ad on Craigslist wanted bed or for a low cost.

I am poor as you now can imagine. I have no other income, but food stamps and am caring for my mother. She is 74 and no one else can do the job, but me staying at home. So I am doing this for my share of the living expenses. I get to live here and get food free.

I also cook and clean and provide mom with everything she needs and drive her to appts. I wonder if I can work legitimately for the city. My friend got paid good money with this job. Healthcare hired him as a homecare provider for his aunt until she passed. Well I will look into that, but as for now, I need a bed and now would be great. How do I get voucher freebie at a store, where and how?

Thank you.

Freecycle or Craigslist.org are good places. Or you could go on Facebook and look for a local buy/sell/giveaway group. IF you are not squeamish (bed bugs!!!) you could always go dumpster diving.

I am a 52 year old veteran and a mother of four children. On May.17,2013 I was walking in the cross walk going home when a red pick up truck ran over me and kept going. I broke a few ribs, shattered my pelvis, tore my bladder, broke my clavicle, and my right arm. I truly need a bed, I can not continue to sleep on the floor with the type of injuries I have. I am a low income parent and I'm unable to afford a soft bed. So please point me in the right direction of someone/company that can help. God bless you all and thank you with all my heart.

Most of the places that will give out free furniture will expect you to be able to haul it. Your best bet, providing you have somebody that will take you to pick it up, will be to go to the office of your local Salvation Army and ask for a voucher for a free bed. They will give that to you, to take to their Thrift Store, and if the store has any beds to give away, they will give it to you. They don't always have the items that a person needs. Most of the stores won't let a person pick from their best items, they will have a certain section set aside for free items. You could also speak to the pastor of your church, he might know of people in the congregation that have an extra bed, and would be willing to deliver it. Also sometimes the pastor of a church will take up a special anonymous offering for a member that needs help.
