My wife and I need a bed. We are sleeping on the floor.

Go to your local Salvation Army Office and ask for a voucher for a bed. They should give you one and then you take it to their thrift store, and providing they have any beds, they will give you one. Be aware that most of those stores won't let you pick from their best beds because they will be able to sell them for more. Also most of the thrift stores expect you to be able to transport whatever you get. This being said, beware of bed bugs.

No matter how badly I needed a piece of furniture right now I wouldn't get anything used unless I personally knew the person that donated it and it would have to be donated specially to me.

IF you have a pastor speak to him, he might know somebody in the congregation that has a spare bed to donate. Sometimes they will even take up a special offering in church for a needy member of the congregation. Another solution is you can get an air mattress for not too much. Three of my adult grandchildren have been sleeping on them for several years because they can't afford actual beds.

You could do worse than making a futon out of a couple of wooden pallets of the same thickness - at least you're not dealing with other people's sweat, cat hairs etc. I saw this on a TV show where they were doing a room makeover on a very low budget.

They used several thicknesses of duvets from a charity shop as a mattress (which again means that you can wash them before use).

Quick PS - you could also post a "wanted" ad to your local Freecycle or Freegle.
