Finding the Value of an Antique German Doll?

Finding the Value of an Antique German Doll - doll with curly dark hairHow do I find out the value of an antique German doll? My mother passed away a couple of years ago, leaving over a thousand dolls. The German one (Simon/Halbig) was her favorite. I don't know if it is more valuable monetarily or if she loved her most for other reasons.

This is a lovely doll but not all dolls from this maker are really THAT valuable. They may not be cheap but it all depends on the model and the mold number (indicating the years produced) and the overall condition as well as the authenticity of the clothing.

Simon & Halbig German Dolls were made from 1839-1943 and I believe your doll was made after 1910 (jointed limbs) but you can look at some of the information and be more accurate. The shape of the face, mouth, eyes, and size of doll determine the year/mold.

Here is a web site that has a lot of information (and some photos) from this company: All of the information is interesting.

Here are some dolls presently listed on auction sites:

Here is a link to the dolls that have recently been sold on eBay, which is a much better evaluation of what someone is willing to pay right now. Although your doll may not be in the group, not too many high priced dolls sell very often.

Be very careful when taking dolls to local shops as they usually have some idea they may be able to buy the doll and their appraisal will be low. This type of doll will usually bring more money at a regular doll auction and you can find information about this type of auction (and authentic appraisals) on the internet. Here is one site:

These are very expensive. The cheapest doll I saw was $1500, and the most expensive was a very rare one that cost $24,000! Go to several dealers to get appraisals so you don't get cheated.
