Fixing a Singer Sewing Machine?

I am looking at buying a vintage singer 467 sewing machine but the reverse buttom is not working. I was told that it is sewing in reverse only. The button is loose and can be pulled in and out. Is this easy to fix?

First of all clean/oil the machine to see if that helps. A spring may also need to be reattached or replaced. You might also try using a hair drier & blowing hot air towards the reverse button for a few minutes to possibly loosen it up. Here are some other things that may help:

You write that the button is loose and can be pulled in and out. Its very common for the spring to disengage and this either makes the reverse button or lever to get stuck in one position or to move freely without any effect. I think that in your case the reason is in the spring. To fix it, youll need to ensure that the sewing machine is not connected to the mains and completely switched off, then open the sewing machine head using a set of Philips screws.

Unscrew the any bolts/screws holding the covers together.
Remove any knobs that can be removed and gently, without force.
Remove the covers. You need to access the reverse button spring.
Trace where the reverse button is located on the inside and locate the spring.
If the spring is dislodged from the side plates, put it back. Move the reverse button to see if it's fixed.
You can also oil it if it's too greasy or rusted. If it's too rusted or broken you need to replace the entire spring. The spring has a limited lifespan, therefore, needs to be changed after a while.

Singer Sewing machine reverse button may very often get stuck as a result of dust and too much friction, because it use a lever-driven by a set of gears and springs on the inside. Open the sewing machine head up and add a bit more grease or oil to reduce friction in the moving parts. Follow the manual on how to service your machine.

This is an older machine and it will probably need a complete cleaning if you want it to do a good job.
Everything is easy if you're familiar with working on/with the older machine - but maybe not if this is all 'greek' to you.

Are you an experienced sewer and just getting this machine as an 'extra' or maybe just want a machine to mess around with?
You'll probably be able to fix the reverse stitching problem fairly easy but there may be other problems the seller is not telling you about or there may be other problems that will spring up as you start using this machine.

Most of the time, you can Google your machine brand/model and find answers to almost any problem but sometimes instructions are not easy to follow and you may need to ask questions.

This is when sewing forums come in handy. I love the forums, as I find so many interesting things/information on these sites.
The members are always helpful.
You will have to join the groups before asking questions.

They show how the mechanism moves when a Singer sewing machine sewing reverse. Open the sewing machine and check if there is something stuck in there or not.

You have to check inside the sewing machine, it's possible something jammed your reverse-stitching mechanism. For example if a loose thread has gotten inside your machine, it can wrap around your backstitch lever and prevent your sewing machine from sewing in reverse.
