House Trained Dogs Pooping Inside?

Why has my mini Dachshund forgotten she is house trained? She was trained to use puppy pads or to go outside in our pen. I had to be in the hospital for 5 days and my husband took care of the dogs. He said they had several accidents in the house while I was away. We have two female mini Dachshunds. Once one of them started pooping in the house and then the other did. They are driving me crazy because I started even going outside in the pen with them and staying for 10 to 15 minutes outside with them. The first thing in the mornings they do their business outside, but in the afternoon then they will poop in the house. They do go pee on the puppy pad, but poop in the living room on the carpet. What am I doing wrong?

Many dogs have stress related issues when their routine is changed and especially when someone that cares for them is away more than usual. Your biggest problem now is probably getting your carpets clean so there is no tell-tail sign/odor of where they have gone astray with their toilet routine.
You may also have to keep them away from your living room area until the cycle is broken and they have gone back to their regular routine. You (or someone) may have to spend more time in the afternoon with them in their outdoor space until they get the idea that that is were they are supposed to potty. It will probably not take too long but this may be the only way to retrain them.

Your dog's schedule was interrupted. She will get back to herself in a short while.

Your husband didn't keep the same schedule as you did. Once a dog smells another dog poop they feel they must poop too. You will need to get the order out of your carpet to help stop this problem. Try using Armor Hammer Baking Soda on your carpets. This will help get rid of the order of the poop. Also look at what time they are pooping in the afternoon. Try and take them out to the pen a little earlier. You should be able to leave them in the pen for an hour or so without being there to watch them.
