My dog refuses to go out the back door to use the potty. She'd rather hold it in all day long and then finally when no one is looking she'll go on the living room floor. I'm not just talking about pee. She will go out front if on a leash, but not often. If she does go out the back door I have to carry her out and then she wants to sit by the door until I finally let her in. She's a 5 month old Pitbull puppy that I've had for 2 weeks.

When I potty trained my silky terrier a few years ago, I used a system of reward and discipline. When she would make her business outside, immediately I would draw her attention to it and give her a treat. If she went in the house I would immediately draw her attention to it and then isolate her (she was very social and did not enjoy being the in bathroom while everyone else was in the living room).
I realized that in order for her to understand what was expected from her I would have to show it with my actions and tone of voice (high and excited when she would go outside, low and serious when she would choose to go inside).
Be consistent and your pet will get it. Also be realistic and fair. The times I got home or woke up later than usual, I didn't do the discipline if she went on the floor already. Try to minimize those times in the beginning till she gets it. Happy training! :)
Sometimes when a pup will do this he needs to be checked for an infection or illness that makes him have a hard time going. Make sure he is healthy before assuming he is just choosing to go that way on the floor.
Also remember that these are the times to take a pup out. The younger the pup and more inexperienced he is with potty training, the more it needs to go outside.
After eating, after waking up, after playing with toys or running, when he smells the floor and turns around....any time you feel he might need to go.
Also, when you go to the door, every so often, every time you see a sign that the pup needs to empty it's bladder, run there to the door like it is a big game. No punishment for mistakes. This is very important.
No punishment, and do not let the baby see you pick up the mess. Take him outside, even if it is pee streaming all over behind you as you go to the door, happy and saying something like "Let's Go Potty...!" When you see the desired act, praise and praise and praise.
