Looks like basil. If you rub a leaf between your fingers it will give off a scent that to me smells like my mom's spaghetti sauce as she used a lot of basil. Seriously, If you have a jar if basil in your spices, compare the scent to be sure.

If it is, someone on thrifty fun (this site) posted an amazing pesto recipe. Yum!!!

Thanks for trying to help identify this but it's definitely not a basil plant. I grow several types of basil and these leaves have no scent to them.

If you have any other suggestions please pass them along.

Too bad it isn't basil. It's such a veratile spice.

It may be in the Pokeweed family...as they look a lot like Basil... goo.gl/.../THzx6D

Some varities are edible, although I am always nervous about determining which are ok, and which aren't.

It does look like Pokeweed but you can always move it to another pot and keep an eye on it until it shows it's true character.

  • If it is Pokeweed, it can grow to 6-8 feet tall and almost the wide so you may not want it around. The birds also like the berries and will propagate it many times over (in your yard and also far away).

  • If you watch it for a couple of weeks you will probably be able to better identify it.
  • Just in case it is Pokeweed, I found a couple of interesting links that you may want to check out. Check the pictures against your actual plant.

Thanks. I'll let it grow in a separate container until I'm sure of its identity. You're right, if it's Pokeweed, I don't want it around.

I don't think it's poke, poke leaf is more spongey and darker. It looks like one of those fast growing weed trees like black walnut and acacium
