My wife is the owner of this sewing machine, which I plan to start using (I am new to sewing) while I purchase a brand (and modern) machine, but I do not have a manual for this machine and without its brand name there is no way for me to find the manual online. I tried goggling Contessa CE Model 440 (which this machine is) to no avail. If anyone in this forum recognizes this machine and where I can find its manual it would be most appreciated. Thank you.

You might try these sites to see if they can help you find a manual. I believe your machine was made by Elna:

I've searched for this sewing machine to no avail. What does the front name plate say below the word Contessa? Also, have you checked over the entire machine...even underneath, or its case, for any more names or numbers. I've been searching for over an hour, and none of the pictures I saw of Contessa machines, looks just like yours. Did you see any metal plate or a sticker with a date of manufacture?
This type of question is asked frequently on ThriftyFun, so please review some of the answers on these links as the 'name' on the machine may be different, but most of the information may still apply.
I believe this is a generic clone sold under several "badges" and quality levels.
Your machine - Contessa CE Model 440 - could have been ordered by a small company/store and it's possible they only ordered 25-100 machines with their choice of names so you may never see another machine with this name.
Singer was 'cloned' the most but there were several other brands that companies made similar models and sold under a buyer's choice of names.
Example: Kenmore has placed its brand name on different brands of products for many years. You may buy a Kenmore but the real brand may be Whirlpool, Maytag, etc. - whatever company wins the Kenmore/Sears bid.
Probably the only way to find out more about your machine is to ask your question on several sewing forums. These members know a lot about clones and can probably help you get a manual and answer any other questions you may have.
Posting to these sites may be 'troublesome' but if you really want answers, they can help.
You can try several forums.
