Is My Dog a Chihuahua?

Is My Dog a Chihuahua? - tri-colored puppyI paid $500 for a Chihuahua pup, but now I'm not so sure she's a Chihuahua. She has floppy, fluffy ears and doesn't show signs of them standing up. She was 3 months old yesterday.

She could be part Chihuahua, but she also looks more like she's got King Charles Cavalier in her. It's going to take some growing to find out what breed or breeds she might have in her genetic makeup. She IS cute, and the best thing to do is love and care for her, and train her right, no matter what breed she is !!!!

I think she is a Chihuahua , there are lots of Chihuahua puppy pictures on line , even with floppy ears . There are a few like your fur baby.

Chihuahua puppy's ears do not all stand erect at the same age so at 3 months old this is too early to be concerned about her ears.
If you bought her from a registered breeder you should have received papers attesting to her being pure bred. If that is not the case then she may have another breed mix but the only way to tell for sure is with a DNA test.
These are popular with many dog owners as the results give them a lot of information about their dogs as well as breeding background.
These test kits can be purchased online, pet stores or her vet and the costs start at about $60 to thousands.

The least expensive tests usually tell everything people need to know about their pet.

Here is an article about the Chihuahua's ears:

Please be sure she is getting all of her first year shots/vaccinations so she will be safe from any floating bugs when she is out and about.

Your pup is 100% adorable!! What a sweet face!!

I would ask your vet to weigh in and see what I can't like the bone structure, teeth, jaw, hips.

If you feel you were cheated, maybe notify your better business organization and talk to your vet about other ways to help you prevent others from being cheated.

I do hope you and your sweet baby have a lovely life together with many happy adventures!

I am so sorry for this but I fear the dog is a mixed breed and not a pure Chihuahua like you were told. Normally if you pay for a purebred dog the breeder must give you papers to register the dog and the full bloodline of the dog. I know this because a friend of mine bought me a full blood Pekinise and it came with all the papers and the bloodline of the dog.

I would contact the better business bureau and report this because this breeder should not be selling purebred dogs without the papers. I do think this is a law in most states now to stop the sale and breeding from backyard breeders who only care about breeding dogs for money and don't have a very clean environment to do this with.

It is possible to report this person and have their establishment checked ut for breeding conditions to make sure they are up to code and follow the rules. I would do this for sure after paying that much for the dog.

She is definitely part Chihuahua. You could do a DNA test on her to determine the complete bloodline.

First, let me start by telling you that your little girl is absolutely beautiful!

There's a distinct possibility that she's a purebred long-haired chihuahua.

If she isn't purebred, I think the other breed that would likely make up her DNA would be papillon.
The good news is that the two breeds have similar physical characteristics and personality traits.

You can read more about the papillon here: www.akc.org/.../

The potential bad news (which, in my opinion, there is not any if she's happy and healthy) is that you paid a large amount of money for a dog breed you may have not received.
If this is the case, do some research about her previous home. Do they have dogs other than chihuahuas? How is their reputation? Have they any negative/positive reviews via BBB or social media outlets?

As for her ears - a puppy's ears may take a few months to stand upright, if they do at all, and they may progress at a slower or faster rate than their litter mates.
Some long-haired chihuahuas' ears remain curved at the ends, and do not fully extend to upward pointing tips.

As a final note, whatever is decided about her breed, please do not take any of those frustrations out on her. She's looking to you to be her new pack leader and best friend, and as long as you show her affection, attention, and care, you'll get back your initial investment ten-fold from a fur baby showering you with unconditional love.

Good luck with the new addition to your family, and I hope you find the information you are wanting!

I think she has papillon in her but she is beautiful. A lot of breeders of small dogs breed several types and are not always careful about them mixing company.
