She does look purebred. A DNA test is the only way to know for sure.

It is illegal to sell a dog as a purebred animal without papers. There are several reason why a person does this.

  1. Without breeding papers you have no idea how to follow the pedigree and health line of your puppy.
  2. Find out why the breeder you purchased your dog from wouldn't pay the small charge to register this dog if it is actually a purebred dog.
  3. The breeder could be breeding the dogs illegally and wants to stay off the grid.

  5. Many small backyard breeders will breed dogs and not register the dog.
  6. The only way for you to actually find out is through the DNA test or the papers from the breeder.

If you have a lot of questions you need to speak with the breeder on this one. Selling a dog for a large sum of money that isn't a purebred or has papers is against the law. There is something this person is hiding from you. Maybe one of the dogs is stolen or isn't a purebred. You won't be able to tell until the puppy is full grown one way or the other.

I wonder if you paid the high cost of a pure bluenose pit bull? These are really expensive dogs but most owners will have papers for a pure bred because it more than doubles what the puppies can be sold for.

  • Puppies change rapidly in their first year and some retain the pit look and others do not even though they were sold as "pure bred".
  • It is possible your puppy is almost pure bred but I feel sure there will be a mix in there somewhere.
  • If looks are what you are concerned about then you may be satisfied with what information you received from the seller.
  • Were you able to see the parents? That is always a good sign that at least you may have some indications as to what your adult dog will look like.
  • However, the only sure way to know is with a DNA test. These test kits cost $50 to $250 and can be purchased from pet stores, on-line (Amazon, eBay, PetSmart, etc) or from your vet.
  • Here is a site that explains about DNA test kits and the second link is to an example of where to purchase the latest kits.

I hope you know how important a puppy's first year health check-up and shots/vaccinations are but here is a link that has a schedule for these and explains about a puppy's first year.
