I originally started upcycling my dad's ties when I'd realized I'd made a poor fashion choice when getting him one for Father's Day. Now, I upcycle them so I can continue his own stylish legacy, with his permission, of course! Dad's one of my favourite people and I love to wear things he no longer wears. With a few stitches, his ties become my fashion statements.

I added a snap button on this so I don't have to pull it over my head when I put it on. I often wear large beehive type hairdos and don't want to ruffle them up!

Total Time: 90 minutes

Yield: 1 necklace

  • 1 necktie
  • sewing pins
  • needle and thread
  • 1 large button
  • 1 snap button

  1. Lay out your tie on a flat surface and begin folding it in a manner that's pleasing to you. You can use small ruffles or large ones, whatever you like.
  2. Take a pin or two and insert at the first ruffle as a guideline for when you sew it closed.
  3. Thread your needle and begin sewing the ruffle in place from the backside.
  4. Secure the bottom and top of the ruffle fold with a stitch.
  5. Double knot your thread so you can move onto the next section.
  6. Create your next ruffle and pin into place.
  7. Sew from the backside again so the stitches aren't seen from the front of the necklace.
  8. Continue along until you have as many ruffles as you like.
  9. Sew your accent button into place.
  10. If you'd like to use a snap button so you don't have to pull the necklace on or over your head, pin two sewing needles as a guide wherever you'd like to attach the snap button.
  11. Sew snap button pieces into place.
  12. Your necklace is ready to wear!

Thanks so much, Betty! Seeing my dad's eyes light up when I wore it was such a gift. It's one of our favourite pieces now :)
