New Rescue Dog Won't Go Potty?

My new rescue is a 16 lb Chihuahua Dachshund mix and about 2-3 years old. I got her yesterday around 1 pm and it is now Monday at 7:30 pm. I've been outside with her for 30 minutes most recently, and all the other times I tried to take her outside she would just go to the bushes and circle and lay down. Every time I bring her out to the grass she either walks back to the bushes or lays down if they're too far. She doesn't know how to walk on a leash either, so I carry her to the grass. I'm concerned that she's been eating and drinking, but hasn't done any of her business inside or outside. Any advice?

Your rescue pet perhaps is used to going potty on cement flooring. Walk the dog to a cement slab; one you can purchase as Walmart and maybe that's what will work.

Also, I would walk the dog; not carry it and do a short leash which is keeping the dog's body close to your legs and have it walk beside you not ahead of you. I have a dog who always rushed me trying to get to the car, etc. and I short leash her with success.

Dogs need time to adjust to a new setting, but not peeing for more than a day, (if she is drinking) I would take her to the vet. Not pooping for more than 3 days also would warrant a vet visit. Leash training takes time and patience and consistency.

There are lots of good YouTube videos to help if you have never done it before. Find one for a chiweinie mix since both breeds are stubborn sweeties! Best wishes for you and your new pup! Post back with updates! Prayers!!

You need to give her time to adjust. Feed and walk at the same time every day.

If the dog is a rescue dog then it means it was abused or kept in a cage for long periods of time and was forced to live in their pee and poop. The dog needs a lot of love and understanding to adjust to the new home life with a caring family. You can try using the leach around the house some to get the dog use to the leach and walking on the leach. You need to stop carrying the dog and putting the dog on the grass area.

When the dog has to go it will go. But for now all you can do is take the dog out and give the dog a chance to get use to the yard. Leave the dog in the yard for around an hour or so and try and play with the dog to get the dog moving around more. The dog needs exercise and I am sure it did not have this in the previous home it lived in.

This behavior is pretty common. It is just part of adjusting. After 2 days without urinating you should talk it over with your Vet. Try not to worry. It almost always works out OK.
