I have got power to the sockets, but when I plug in anything it does not work.
I know the power is on, as I tried an extension lead which lit up, but as soon as I plugged anything in, nothing.

Call the electric company. The power to your box may not be working, and it is their responsibility to fix. If not, an electrician may need to be called in, as one of the breakers itself is not working properly.
Definitely contact an electrician. Electricity is not something to monkey with unless you are an expert.

Probably a bad socket, try to call an electrician to make sure, and let him replace the socket or whatever is wrong.
